John Gatten Obituary

John Raymond "J.R." Gatten, 28, of Newville, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Shippensburg Health Care Center in Shippensburg.

He was born July 26, 1980, on Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Va., and was the son of John E. Gatten of Newville and Duryea L. (Negley) and her husband David Hummer, of Newville.

J.R. attended Big Spring High School in Newville and later on earned his G.E.D. He was formerly employed by the Crossroads Restaurant in Newville and the Cinemas 8 at Carlisle Commons. He attended Newville Assembly of God and enjoyed sports, especially Duke basketball, the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees baseball teams. J.R. also enjoyed pro football, listening to music, watching movies, playing video games and his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by paternal grandmothers, Frances Laura Gatten, of Carlisle, and Joanne Garner, of Rockingham, N.C.; his maternal grandparents, Raymond L. and Anna V. Negley, of Newville; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Gerald Day officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.
