David Wickstrom Obituary

David John Wickstrom
Born: May 8, 1953
Died: April 21, 2023
David John Wickstrom of Cortland, IL passed away on April 21, 2023.
Dave was born on May 8, 1953, in Chicago IL where he became an avid sports fan. He was thrilled to see each of his teams win at least one championship, especially the Cubs. He attended the first ever Bulls home game, the first scheduled night game at Wrigley Field, and the Blackhawks Stanley Cup parade in 2010.
At a young age Dave knew he wanted a career in law enforcement. That wish was fulfilled, having retired with 25 years of service to the NIU Police Department.
Dave loved fishing in Michigan with his brother, many day trips to Galena, photography, music, and being outdoors. Most of all, Dave loved spending time with his children and in later years his two granddaughters.
Dave was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, whose ministry meant so much to him.
Dave is survived by his brother Dennis (Peggy) Wickstrom of Michigan, daughter Tessa (Wes) Mayne of Dekalb, sons Dean and Michael Wickstrom of Dekalb, and granddaughters Tessa Grace and Ella Mayne, cousins, friends Bob and Marc that were like family to him, and many friends he loved so much.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at 3:00pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb with Pastor Marty Marks officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, from 1:00pm until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the family to be established at a later date. Arrangements and cremation rites were entrusted to Finch Funeral Home 310 Oak St. DeKalb, IL 60115 815-758-3841.

I was practically destroyed when I first heard of Dave's passing but I still remember meeting him on my first day working at NIU. We became friends on that first day and I have cherished that friendship every day since then. Dave knew he was always welcome at my Galena cottage and he spent many care-free days there--sometimes, he would tell "locals" that he was a part-time Galena resident. You made this Earth a better place in your short stay here, Dave, so you deserve to Rest In Peace..

I'm so sorry you kids are going through this. I loved your Dad. He was awesome. His presence will truly be missed.

We are all sadden with Dave’s passing, but I will always have special memories of the wonderful and happy childhood I had that was influenced greatly by my special second family, my Aunt Mimi, Uncle Harry, Denny, and Dave. Being the youngest of the “kids” growing up, Dave always brought an energy and enthusiasm to us.
In the last couple years, Dave and I shared photos periodically with each other from our early years. Those fond memories live brightly and are timeless.
God Bless.

Dave was like a brother to me for 47 years, to say I've lost a part of me, is a gross understatement. Rest in Peace my friend.
