Joe Jeffers, Jr. Obituary

Joe Jeffers Jr., 84, of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, died peacefully Monday, August 30, 2010 at 7:40 a.m. at home surrounded by his family. Joe was born June 15, 1926 in Dallas, Texas to Dr. Joseph Jeffers, a Baptist minister and his wife, Jessie. His family relocated to Los Angeles in 1935. Joe enjoyed a brief acting career dancing with Shirley Temple in her movie, "Heidi". At seventeen he enlisted in the Unites States Navy and was stationed onboard the USS Boyd as a quartermaster. Joe proudly served our country in 19 major battles during WWII, where he was awarded two Silver Stars. In 1945, he returned to the South Bay area, choosing to settle in the city of Gardena to raise his family. His business career began by selling breads door-to-door. After four years he sold his route and became a realtor. In 1951, he opened his own real estate and escrow offices. For twenty years he partnered with a general contractor, Richard Moore on remodels, additions and new construction in the Gardena area. Joe became a member in good standing and director and board member of numerous clubs, committees, organizations and association. During the Korean War he was appointed as a major in the California Defense & Security Corps and later became a state chairman, appointed by President Johnson for selective service. For ten years he served on the board of directors for the Republic Bank in Gardena, followed by ten years of service for the Republic Bank of Utah. After fifty years of serving Gardena and the surrounding communities, Joe retired and closed his Jeffers Realty and Escrow Company. Joe enjoyed people, traveling, hunting, fishing, skiing, golfing, photography, Dodger games and flying his Cessna P210 with his longtime friend, Buzz. Joe was diagnosed with Leukemia (CMML) in March of 2009. In May 2010, he retired from banking. He spent his last year enjoying the company of family and friends. Joe Jeffers is survived by his wife, Toni; sister, Jessie Jean Dyess of Texas; daughter, Nancy Sherwood; and stepdaughters, Vickie Rico and Julie Chambers; son, Danny Jeffers; and stepson; James Purcell. He is further survived by nine grandchildren; and three great-grandsons; nieces, nephews, and foster brothers, Bill and Merle Blankenship; and foster sister; Dorleta Hardwick. Toni, Family and friends - there is a typographical error in our message. It says "El Camino Iranians" - I guess the dictionalry being used for the messages never heard of us "Kiwanians" - it should have read, "El Camino Kiwanians" Ed & Irene Russ

I was twenty years old when Joe allowed me to sell real estate part time at Jeffers & Co. It was a great start from a warm and amazing person. I learned from the best and his teachings served me well. How lucky were you all to have had in your lives for so very long. Hugs to you, Joe!

Joe will be missed by so many people - the Sisters of St. Anthony that he would take to his ranch; the El Camino Iranians; the YMCA: all those people he entertained with his singing; the gang that gathered Friday nights at the Rolling Hills Country Club; all his business partners, and those who found homes they could afford because of Joe's dedication to his profession and his high ethics - all of those who were fortunate to have had any contact with him as friends or business associates, and mostly by his large family and loving wife. For Joe - we know he is with his maker and probably shooting a par round of golf. To all those close to him we offer our prayers, and hope they will give conform to them in this difficult time. Toni and Family: I had the pleasure of working with Joe on some of his Escrow needs and I can tell you that I am truly blessed to have known him. His presence in my office could not be mistaken and he always had that sweet smile across his face. What an amazing man and family....he will be truly missed.

God Bless You, Toni & family, during this tremendous time of loss. I know it will be difficult as Joe really lit up the room whenever he walked in. I worked with him at Republic Bank in Torrance... We kept in touch over the years - most recently at our church, Holy Trinity in San Pedro. I'll never forget his funny personality.
He was a very dear man and I will miss seeing him by your side, Toni. I know you will cherish the memories ~ especially with all the photos he's taken throughout the years! What a blessing.

Wow... too many memories to list: Bloomfield, swimming, birthdays, Japaniese food at Toky's and so much more.
A second dad to me. Taught me to swim, hunt and water ski.
When we would go somewhere together, he would always introduce me as: "the ugliest kid on the block"
THANK YOU JOE, for all you were to me.
Chas

This is one way I will remember you!

Joe was always friendly and supportive. I loved hearing him tell me about his garden and his tomatos, we would compete to see if he could beat me with the first red ripe tomato each year. He was a great asset to those of us here at Republic Bank and we will dearly miss him.
