John Mavar Obituary

Dec. 26, 1926 - March 4, 2019 Legendary San Pedro builder John Mavar passed away on Monday, March 4, 2019, at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, John A. Mavar (Holly), Sande Dannehl (Dennis), Shirlee McIlvaine, Jim Trevillyan (Jan Maree), and Kelly Main; grandchildren, John M. Mavar, Rory Wilson (Kristin), Nicholas Mavar, Monica Thomas (Brandon), Rebecca Rutan (Mike), Jennifer McIlvaine, Casey McIlvaine, Madeline Cash, Jayme Mavar and Jack Mavar; great grandchildren, Oliver Thomas, Harley Rutan, Hunter Rutan, Paxton Thomas and Isabel Wilson. He also is survived by his first wife and good friend Bonnie Mavar. His daughter Debbie Trevillyan Bergner preceded him in death. John was born in San Pedro on December 26, 1926, to Croatian immigrant parents. He attended 15th Street Elementary School, Dana Junior High, and San Pedro High School for a time, before joining the Navy, where he served in World War II. He returned to San Pedro in 1946, and built his first house in 1950. During the next 52 years, he developed and constructed nearly 300 buildings in San Pedro and the surrounding communities. These buildings included the iconic Mavar Grand Hotel (now the Best Western Plus San Pedro), The Estates condominiums, and private residences, including "The Castle" on Patton Avenue. His last project in 2002 was his final home, rising above the cliffs of San Pedro, atop Royal Palms State Beach. John will be remembered by his family and friends as a strong man with a soft heart. His propensity for interesting sayings, nicknamed "Mavarisms," kept everyone laughing, while his love of entertaining and Croatian cooking kept everyone coming back for more. His legacy will live on in the memories of those who loved him, as well as in the many buildings in San Pedro that carry the mark of his master craftsmanship. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 11, from 5–8 p.m., at McNerney's Mortuary, 570 W. 5th Street, San Pedro. Services will be held Tuesday, March 12, at 10 a.m., at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1292 W. Santa Cruz Street, San Pedro. Dear “Dad”,
There are truly no words to convey the impact you had on so many lives, and my life. You always made sure to teach us all so much, I don’t even know where to begin, except the very true core you gave to all of us – the value of family, and true friends. I am so very thankful you came into my life, and filled it with more love than I could ever have imagined. You blessed me with more sisters and a brother, and made sure to make us close, I will be forever grateful. We could not be more blessed because of you.
You lived a good life - filled with honesty, integrity, and all the love from the ones that were close to you.
Thank you for giving us all a good life, we will miss you always!

I am blessed to Have grandparents for over 40 years. No matter what kind of family drama we all may have though out the years I have always Appreciated and respected what family is all about.
With the passing of a San Pedro Man who came from nothing but in turn poured his own foundation that built a big family And a community. Not a politician like his grandson, but a person that changed City of LA building codes with respect to heights and
Density of properties. Chances are you may live or have lived or know someone who has lived in a Property he built. Or you may have visited or stayed in his iconic hotel or office developments. My grandfather, a world war 2 veteran, active community resident by participated in organizations around town throughout his year was most passionate about cooking every Sunday night for family dinners. During those dinner I would learn of my Dida (grandpa) Mavar's way of saying things also know as mavarisms. He like the spot light, Not in public but front and center when it came to family.
Growing up he was illusive and mysterious and kind. As I grew up we became closer and closer and the more conversations we had I became more humbled and educated. I am proud to carry his name which makes his passing a little easier for me. Love you Dida!
