Peter Breitenstein Obituary

Peter Breitenstein

Peter Breitenstein died at his childhood home in Rolling Hills on October 11, 2012 of gastric cancer. Born on February 1, 1947 to George "Kim" and Myrtle "Pixie" Breitenstein, Pete lived in and around Palos Verdes all of his life. He graduated from Chadwick High School and El Camino College. During the Vietnam War, Pete was a forward observer for the Army's 11th Infantry Brigade and was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked at Wilmington Iron Works and the Unocal Refinery in Wilmington before leaving the workforce to become Mr. Mom. A naturally adventurous, knowledgeable, and curious man, he was a pilot, sailor, surfer, cyclist, 4-wheeler, climber, welder, mechanic, master woodsman, gardener, chef, and guitarist. Pete was a gifted craftsman and he could often be found in his garage workshop making furniture, leather goods, candles, and toys for his family. He said that his greatest accomplishments in life were his three sons, whom he loved to take camping and backpacking in the Sierras. An active supporter of his local Boy Scout Troop 783, Pete was immensely proud that all three of his sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout, an achievement none of them could have realized without his profound guidance. His spirit of independence, handiness, and curiosity about every natural and man-made phenomenon lives on with his boys, who affectionately refer to him as "The Dobian". Peter is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susan, and their children, Ryan Kimbrough, Scott, and Steven. A memorial service will be held at the Rolling Hills United Methodist Church (26438 Crenshaw Boulevard, Rolling Hills Estates) on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at noon.

I had the good fortune to work with Pete at the beginning of my career under Unocal in the earlier 90's. He was very kind as he patiently and without reservations mentored me about the instrumentation craft. He had great insight in the inner working of mechanical devices and shared and delivered his knowledge in a manner that made it easier to understand. I tank you Pete for your help. You will be missed.

I was one of the privileged of knowing Pete. I worked with him at the refinery and always had a great time talking to him because he was very knowledgeable of so many things, that we could talk for a long time. I really admired that he quit his job to dedicate his life to raise his children. It takes a special person to do so.
He'll be highly missed.

I am so saddened to hear of Pete's passing. He had the most unique sense of humor and kept us who worked with him in stitches. The campouts we had in the Sierras were epic! RIP old buddy!

I feel so greatful that after several years I saw Pete a short time back. I met him in Harbor College in 1966 and again in Vietnam. We met again in college after the service and became fast friends for many years. He was always a special person; talented, adventurous and kind with a special sense of humor. Susan, Glenna, Laura & I will miss him and wish the best to Sue and the boys.

To the Breitensteins, I really enjoyed working with Pete. Great sense of Humor, that was missed when he left the refinery for bigger and better things at home raising his boys. There are still times when something funny will happen at work that brings back fond old memories that often include Your Husband/Dad. Rest in Peace Pete

Pete was indeed a great great man. It might be considered cliche to say that he lives on through his three sons, but in this case it is so very true. His sons epitomize what we would all want our children to turn out to be. We love you, Pete, and we miss you so much already.
