Richard Medof Obituary

Richard Allen Medof

Richard Allen Medof, M.D., born March 18, 1944 in Murfreesboro, Tenn., passed away peacefully on May 30, 2015 in Las Vegas at the age of 71. Dr. Medof was preceded in death by his parents, Milton Irving Medof and Rose Singer Medof. He grew up in Los Angeles and attended Hamilton High School, where he served as student body president. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and received his medical degree from the University of Southern California. Dr. Medof served in the U.S. Public Health Service and cared for merchant seamen and local fishermen in San Pedro. He met his future wife, Antoinette Ernandes, when she brought her father, a fisherman, in for a medical examination. Part of his service also included caring for residents at Native American Indian reservations in Gallup, N.M. Dr. Medof completed his residency in ophthalmology in New Orleans. He opened his practice in the late 1970s in San Pedro and performed surgeries at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital. Dr. Medof returned to New Orleans with his family in 1994 to serve as director of the Ophthalmology Department at Chabert Medical Center and train medical residents in Houma, La. He also served on the Board of Directors at Chabert Medical Center and at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. Dr. Medof drew great satisfaction from his career, over which he improved and saved many people's lives. He retired from medicine in 2008 and moved to Las Vegas with his wife, Antoinette, and Labrador Retriever, Samson. Throughout his life he received endless joy watching his children grow and thrive, and more recently, he enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. His family cherishes his lifetime of love and support and fondly remembers him fishing in Mexico and Louisiana, taking motorhome trips nationwide and cruises around the world, enjoying seafood platters at Deanie's restaurant in New Orleans, and sledding in Big Bear. He will be remembered for his kindness and strong character, and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Antoinette; children: Jennifer (John), Michael, Robert; grandchildren: Avery, Henry; siblings: Edward, Robert (Suzanne), Carol; nephew: Justin; and extended family. He was laid to rest on Thursday, June 4 at Green Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the SPCA or a charity of your choice. Rich and I were pledge brothers at ZBT fraternity in the spring of 1962 at UCLA. I just learned of his passing this morning and it breaks my heart. Although he transferred to Berkeley we stayed in touch for several years and he came to San Diego for my wedding in 1968. The last time I saw him was in the late 70s when he was in San Diego for a medical convention. Our last conversation was on the phone when he was returning with his family from Mexico in a camper. Despite the lack of contact over the years we were "bosom buddies" and I will miss him forever

Dick was a wonderful man and a credit to the San Pedro medical community. He enjoyed a full and wonderful life, with his travels and his family. Godspeed old friend.

To Antoinette, Jennifer, Michael and Robert,

We are all terribly saddened to hear of my good friend's passing. Our relationship heralds back to our common experiences with U.S.P.H.S. Rich was a kind and generous landlord for almost twenty years. Although we did not speak often, I know that he appreciated all of us here at 1350 W Seventh St.

Somehow I hope that you may have a bit of comfort in knowing that your grief is shared; and that love and prayers are being sent your way.

May God Bless and keep you, Rich.

Sincerely,
Dr. Bob Autore, Laurie, and staff.
