William Butcher Obituary

William "Bill" Evans Butcher 6-28-1953 to 9-10-2018 On Monday, Sept 10th, Bill Butcher passed away, age 65 after ongoing health challenges. Bill was a surfer, an animal lover and a cheeky soul with a big heart. He was born in Kansas City Missouri and raised in Redondo Beach, California. Bill spent his younger years chasing waves around the world and was at his happiest living simply - by the beach, in good company. Some of Bill's fondest memories were from his time living on the North Shore of Oahu and the Greek island of Crete. Of all the places Bill visited, he loved returning home to California and surfing with his buddies near Marine Avenue, Manhattan Beach. In his thirties, Bill eventually settled back in Redondo Beach and built his life around his family and his beloved dogs. He was a live-in carer for his mother for almost twenty years and supported her day and night until her eventual passing in 2012. Bill was an avid supporter of animal shelters and during his lifetime he adopted five doggies in need - Max, Pumpkin, Oreo I, Oreo II and Ana - whom he loved dearly. For him, life without the love and companionship of his canine friends was unthinkable (as unthinkable as taking his dog for a walk and not making friends with other dog owners!) In his later years, when his health didn't allow him to surf, Bill visited the beach many times a week to watch the surfers and reflect on life. His tales of adventure brought smiles to those around him and continue to inspire his family to take chances, live wholeheartedly - and let's be honest, make a little trouble - every day. Bill is remembered with love by his brother Mike, his sister-in-law Joyce, and his nieces Corrie and Nicole. He is also survived by his sister Claudia and her husband Danny and their large and loving family, especially Bill's nephew Jason, his wife Tasha and their son Christian. Bill was a registered organ donor, and in keeping with his wishes, his body will posthumously assist others. It was his wish to be cremated and his ashes deposited beyond the waves that he loved to watch and dream about. The family is forever grateful to Bill's many wonderful neighbours on Voorhees Avenue, whose kindness, caring and generosity, particularly at the end, made a huge difference in his life, as well as the paramedics, hospital staff and doctors at Little Company of Mary and Torrance Memorial Hospitals. A memorial service will be held at the beach Bill held so dearly - Marine Avenue, Manhattan Beach on 23 Sep 18 at 1pm. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits

Billy was the most devoted uncle I could have asked for. We shared a love of animals, music, and ice cream. I will miss his kind, loving nature. Rest in peace. Love, Nikki.

Billy was my buddy for over 50 years. We shared many crazy adventures together over our years as friends. We spoke a couple of times a day, including his last day. Amazingly, he sounded better then he had in weeks just hours before passing. I will cherish the memories of our friendship the rest of my life. Marine Street will forever bring memories of you Billy. I take comfort in knowing you are reconnecting with your mom again. Also say high to Lee G. during your poker games. Miss you buddy. Goodbye for now, Bob

I've lived two doors down from Bill for the past 17 years. Bill was ever-present in our neighborhood. He was the guy that would sniff out the unscrupulous and voice his opinion, if he felt it would disparage our area. He was the king of our "Neighborhood Watch." I bonded with him over our respective dogs and there was no doubt that his heart was with all animals and making certain that he would do what he could do to bring happiness to a lonely pet. He was also a tremendous caretaker for his ailing mother for many years. I never heard him complain about it. He just did it. I will also fondly remember all the times he locked himself out of his house and then asking for my son to crawl through his doggie-door to get him back in. He had a security contraption set up at his back-door that if anyone attempted to come through, chimes would swing into the culprits face kind of like in Home Alone. Those chimes hit me in the face a few times. We will miss you, Bill.
