Calvin Dennis Obituary

Let us not grow weary... Calvin Dennis passed away on May 4th, 2015 after suffering from multiple strokes on April 23rd through April 26th, 2015. He was born on June 2nd,, 1924 in San Antonio, Texas to Allen John and Leanna (Cowley) Dennis Calvin was raised on a sharecropping farm and began working on the farm at the age of 6. When he was about 12, he attended a church service for the first time at a tent meeting where he gave his life to the Lord. At the age of 14, after his mother's death, he took over farm trying to keep his brother and sisters together. Calvin joined the US Navy before the start of World War II at the age of 17. He served in multiple theatres of the war as a Signalman and Radioman in the Navy Armed Guard serving onboard merchant ships and naval ships in Convoy. He received the Purple Heart for injuries suffered during the sinking of the Leda that he was stationed aboard in the Caribbean Sea on November 3, 1942. He received the Bronze Star medal for his efforts in shooting down an enemy torpedo plane during a Convoy action. After the war in 1945, he traveled to Louisiana to complete High School. He received a BS degree in Business after three years at Trinity University in San Antonio. Calvin enjoyed being with people and took a job in sales as a manufacturer's representative after college. While in working in Wichita Kansas, Calvin met his future wife Bobbe in church which was pastored by her father. Calvin and Bobbe were married in 1950 and lived in Tennessee, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas with their 4 children until the family moved to Boulder Colorado in 1967. Calvin's faith in God was the dominant theme in his life. He genuinely enjoyed meeting people, encouraging them and telling them about Jesus. His impact on others was significant. It has been said that "It is not the honor that you take with you, but the heritage you leave behind." Calvin will be known by his love for God and the heritage of love that he left behind. His smile, wisdom, and positive attitude will be missed by all whose life he touched. Calvin had two favorite scriptures; John 14:6 "I am the way, and the truth, and the life..." and Gal. 6:9 "Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." He firmly believed that salvation is through Jesus alone and he always sought to do good in His name and did not give up - he is now reaping his reward. He is survived by his wife of 65 years marriage Roberta Bergen(Bobbe); 4 children Michael (Catherine) Dennis, Debi (Bud) Fike, John (Elinda) Dennis, and Patrick (Sharon) Dennis; 5 grandchildren Elyssa Fike (Chad Behan), Shaughnessy Fike, Caitlin Dennis, Barbara Dennis, Caleb Dennis; his Brother Wilbur (Lavonne) Dennis of Kemp Texas and numerous nieces/nephews/extended family. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18th at the Boulder Valley Christian Church, 7100 South Boulder Road, Boulder Colorado, at 3pm.
