George Hufford Obituary

George Allen Hufford passed away April 11, 2014 at home with his family in Boulder, Colorado. He was born June 1, 1927 in San Francisco, California to Luzerne and Edna Hufford. He attended Billings High School in Billings, Montana. He later earned a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering at CalTech and a PhD in Mathematics at Princeton University. In 1954, he married Lottie Lee Webb of Oak Bluffs, Mass. They had planned to celebrate their 60th anniversary later this spring. They had three children, George, Richard, and Lottie Lee, all of whom survive him. His brother, Luzerne Hufford, Jr. preceded him in death. After graduation, he taught at Princeton University, Stanford University, and the University of Washington. In 1964, he started work with the Department of Commerce in Boulder as a mathematician, specializing in radio wave propagation, which was his passion in life. He continued with the Department of Commerce Boulder Laboratory in Boulder through his retirement in 1997 and thereafter through 2012 as a Subject Matter Expert on radio propagation. He published numerous technical papers throughout his career in Boulder. In November 1992, he received a Certificate of Recognition from the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences for "an approach to characterizing multipath on HDTV type paths, and for developing new coefficients for the millimeter wave propagation model (MPM)". In 1991, he received a Silver Medal award "for outstanding technical contributions to U.S. efforts in telecommunications research and engineering." George always made himself available to help his children in their education. George was a giant in his field, but also, a very generous and gentle person. He was a wonderful mentor and his advice was always profound. He will be greatly missed. At his request, no memorial service is planned.

I was so sorry to hear about George. He was a great guy and a most wonderful neighbor. I lived across the street from them for 21, 22 years. I was blessed. He will be missed. I know all the children and Lottie will always be proud of him.

Our condolences to Lottie and the Hufford "kids". (We went through the BVSD together). As long-time "neighbors", it has always been a pleasure driving by the Hufford place, and I am sorry to hear about Mr. Hufford. A remarkable life, and I am glad he was able to stay at home.
