HARRY HOLLANDER Obituary

Harry F. Hollander, 81, of Schenectady, passed away on April 23, 2011, at Kingsway Arms Nursing Home after a long illness. Born on March 3, 1930 in Jersey City, NJ, Harry was the son of the late Harm and Elizabeth Ufen Hollander. He was raised and educated in Jersey City where he lived until moving with his family to Schoharie in the late 1940s. Harry worked on the family dairy farm until entering the U.S. Army in 1951. Shortly after his service in the Army, Harry started his career of over 38 years as a barber. Harry managed and barbered at the Niskayuna Barber Shop from its opening, until his retirement in 1995. After his retirement, his dedication to his clients continued, visiting people at hospitals, nursing homes, and the homebound to cut hair. Harry loved his family. He was very active, enjoying golfing, skiing, boating, and gardening. Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Betsy Hollander, whom he married in 1954; two daughters, Nancy (Robert LaPietro) Gonzalez of Schenectady and Pam (Chris) Ficco of Glen Allen, VA; three grandchildren, Adam-Rey Gonzalez, and Victoria and Curren Ficco; three brothers, Edward (Gloria) Hollander of Syracuse, William (Shirley) Hollander of Bristol, VA, and David (Lynne) Hollander of Bristol, TN; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 10 a.m. at Lynnwood Reformed Church, 3714 Carmen Rd., Schenectady. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the Lutheran Cemetery on Main St. in Schoharie, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Kingsway Arms Nursing Home for their many years of care. A special thanks to Ronna and Shelly for their loving care. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Lynnwood Reformed Church, or Community Hospice of Schenectady. To express condolences visit www.scott-barbieri.com.

Betsy:

Ginny and I are very sorry to learn of Harry's passing. We enjoyed so much our time with you and Harry at the dining table over the past four years during our many trips back east to visit my parents at Kingsway. We had a lot of laughs and will always remember Harry waiting for you to come through those lobby doors. I just wish we could have gotten to know Harry before he got sick. Harry always was and always will be "number 1" We all can be confident that Harry is now in a better place.
