Maureen P. (Corrigan) Wronkowski, 72, of Leland, NC, passed very peacefully on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 following a three year battle with multiple myeloma.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on May 19, 1950, Maureen was the daughter of the late Michael and Dorothy Horan Corrigan. She grew up in Lynbrook, NY and graduated from Lynbrook High School in 1968. She later attended SUNY Albany and earned her BA in English in 1972 and her BA in Education in 1975.

Upon graduation, Maureen began her 34 year teaching career at Columbia High School in East Greenbush teaching English.

Maureen always placed the well being of her family, whom she so very much loved, and her many cherished friends ahead of herself.

Maureen is survived by her loving husband Gary M. Wronkowski, two sisters; Carolyn (Howie) Chin and Denise (John) Whelan, two brothers; Michael Corrigan and Jerry Corrigan, two children through marriage; Matthew (Lindsay) Wronkowski and Stacey Wronkowski, one grandchild; Noah Adam Wronkowski as well as many nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 9 – 10:45 a.m. at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave. followed at 11:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Madeleine Sophie Church.

Burial will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.

Although we miss Maureen so very much, we are comforted knowing she is with the angels, smiling down upon us. May she rest in peace.

Maureen was a consummate colleague, selfless mentor, and dear friend to so many of us at Columbia High School. I was fortunate to work with her for over a decade. Her attention to detail, joy in teaching, and concern for the well being of others were things to emulate.

Before she retired, Maureen bestowed her classroom podium to me and said, "Put it to good use because you will be teaching Public Speaking next year." I was humbled, because she'd taught that elective for years.

I also remember the last day Maureen taught: a group of seniors gave her a tiara and carried her in an office chair around the south tower! She blushed, laughing to the point of tears. She was worthy of such adulation.

Many alumni who teach or have taught in our district would cite Maureen as a prime inspiration for their career choice.

Rest in peace, lady with the resounding laugh and heart of gold!

Maureen never thought of herself first and always wanted to know how my husband, kids and grandkids were doing. She was a teacher of excellence, a refuge for young people who needed her and a friend without equal. Her loss leaves a hole in many hearts.

Although our time of getting to know each other was relatively short ( in the span of her life time) I will always remember Maureen as a sweet caring compassionate person. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to have her as a dear friend , even for such a short time. Rest peacefully Maureen knowing you have been a blessing to all who knew you.
