PAUL TERHORST Obituary

WOOD DALE - Claiming to have been "born in a tailpipe," classic car enthusiast Paul TerHorst had a colorful phrase for nearly every situation, was rarely at a loss for words and never missed a party, especially if it involved his many friends from numerous classic car clubs. He also loved spending time with family, including his wife, Jean TerHorst, to whom he was married 57 years and who preceded him in death, his three daughters and his seven grandchildren. A true character, Paul frequently said that when he was born "they broke the mold," and upon learning of his passing, his friends said he was a "legend" and it was the "end of an era." He typically wore iconic suspenders that looked like tape measures so that when people commented on them he could ask "Do I measure up*" He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., the only child of Bernard and Alice TerHorst. He insisted he had to walk to school every day through five feet of snow, no matter the season. He fell in love with "olde" cars at an early age and while he couldn't wait to leave Buffalo's weather behind, he retained his love of beef on weck sandwiches and Bocce pizza. He graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College (now State University of New York at Buffalo), where he met Jean, received a Master's Degree from Michigan State University, and was a driver's education instructor in Boca Raton, Fla., before settling in Buffalo Grove, where he worked for Allstate, and then as a compliance officer for the Illinois Board of Education. But his true passion was classic cars. When he moved to Illinois in the 1960s, Paul started the Packards of Chicagoland car club and was a member of numerous other clubs, including the Greater Illinois Region Classic Car Club of America (GIRCCCA) and the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA). He planned his life around car shows (Concours d'Elegance), caravans (destination/ driving trips) and swap meets. The highlight of the year was the road trip he and a group of friends took every October to the AACA meet in Hershey, Penn., where he bought and sold car parts and memorabilia. Surrounded by people effused with the same passion, he was in his element. Paul and Jean enjoyed travel, and took their young daughters on long summer driving trips throughout the country. When driving west, Paul insisted his daughters get out of the car and walk into California. He and Jean traveled to Europe, Greece and Alaska in later years. In addition to his daughters, Cheryl terHorst (Burt Constable), Karen TerHorst (Perry Pollock) and Laurie (David) Jacobs, Paul is survived by six grandsons, Ross, Benjamin and Wilson Constable, Klee and Bryce Pollock and Logan Jacobs, and one granddaughter, Sydney Jacobs. His family plans a party in his celebration once it is safe to gather and drink beer without wearing masks, likely fall or summer of 2021. First saw Paul many years ago at the Hawthorn Woods 4th of July parade. He was driving a 1965 mustang. I had a '67 in high school, so I went over to talk. Paul stored my BMW Roadster in the winter for a few years. and whatever "beater" I had as a winter car, in the summer. Saw Paul quite a bit at the "Y" in his later years.

One of the best "old car guys" I have had the privilege of knowing. He and Jean are some of the earliest ACD folks I met. 9th St and the Swapmeet haven't been the same since Paul stopped coming. I hope that happy memories fill your hearts during this difficult time. Paul was a "true classic". I hope he and Jean have a full tank of gas and an open road. Godspeed, dear friends.

I met Paul in the early 1980’s and stored several of my old Chrysler cars with him over the years. I always enjoyed our “car-guy” conversations. If I ever needed a part for one of my cars Paul usually knew of a contact for me to call. Paul also always had an opinion on any topic especially some of our state’s past and present upstanding politicians! My best memory of Paul was from one Saturday morning about ten years ago at Paul’s garage in Mundelein when Paul enthusiastically took time to show my then teenage son his awesome Auburn and Packard collection. Paul also gave my son a detailed history lesson on his many challenges in restoring them. My son still remembers that morning. My condolences to Paul’s family. Rest in peace my friend. Someone as special you will never be forgotten.

Paul was a great guy and quite the character. I kept my Mercedes with him for a few years while I worked out of state. When I would come to his place to check on the car, he would always have a story or would listen to one once in a while. Thanks Paul, you will be missed until we meet again...

Paul was indeed one of a kind. I met him through the GIRCCCA. He always had a kind word, a smile, and generally some quip to try to bring a smile to everyone else's face. He will be missed.

We had the privilege of meeting Paul through the AACA and were proud to be friends. He could charge up or calm down everyone around him . Jean and Paul travelled with us on an Lake Geneva weekend after they had car trouble. What an experience! Silence never fell in his presence. After a party at their house there they had a nasty plumbing problem and he and Joanna worked in the mess to get things flowing again.... such a card ! After that he referred to her as his plumber.
We will miss him.

Paul and I go back 50 years when we first met in the Classic Car Club of America. We became close friends in the Classic car club and the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg Club. We has some wonderful times in Auburn over the Labor Day festivals. Paul and I did a lot of horse trading car parts and I think he was better at it than I was! I always enjoyed Paul's visits to my marina when we would go next door for a burger and beers and then a Chris -Craft ride down the Fox River. Great memories to enjoy and my condolences to his lovely daughters

He was a character indeed. It seems my dad was always making a part for one of his classic cars. When it worked Paul would have my dad make more and sell them at his swap meets. Now he’s on the big car ride in the sky. Rest In Peace.
