THEODORE UTCHEN Obituary

Theodore M. "Ted" Utchen died March 4, 2021. He was born in St. Paul Minnesota on June 25, 1929 to Joseph and Lillian Utchen. Ted grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota; Petersburg, Virginia; Oshkosh, Wisconsin where he graduated from high school in 1946, and Topeka, Kansas. In 1950, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Kansas with a degree in Political Science. Ted served as 1st Lieutenant in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was discharged from service in 1955. He received his J.D. and his LLM in Constitutional Law from the University of Michigan School of Law where he was elected to the Order of the Coif Honor Society. Ted engaged in trial practice in Wichita, Kansas before becoming a trust officer with the National Bank of Tulsa. In 1964, he and his wife Esther moved to Chicago when Ted joined The Northern Trust Company as a trust and probate officer. Ted and his wife made their home in Wheaton, Illinois where Ted lived until his death. Ted and his wife had two children, Frank and Kathy. In 1968, Ted left the Northern Trust Company to join the law department of Miami Corporation, where he worked until retiring from his position as Vice President and General Counsel in 1990. After retiring from Miami Corporation, Ted served as an arbitrator for the Cook County and DuPage County Circuit Courts. He was an active member a several Chicago Bar Association committees. Also, because of his interest in Constitutional Law, Ted joined the Freedom From Religion Foundation emphasizing the separation of church and state. Ted was a member of the American Humanist Association as well as The Theosophical Society of America. Ted's favorite charitable activity was his annual dictionary project where he would donate and bestow a dictionary upon every 3rd grade student at 32 Western suburban elementary schools. In presenting the dictionaries, Ted would teach the children that learning word choice and correct spelling at an early age would be a lifelong benefit. Ted was a self-proclaimed library addict; he called libraries his second home and he was pleased to support public libraries across many Western Suburbs.

I remember you dad always being warm, funny, and in a smart sharp way. It was great reading about his life. I now see how his background is reflected in his kids, and I admire him even more. As an interesting bonus, I see many of my big heart activist friends I've met as an adult knew him as well.

I knew Ted as a member of the Baha'i community and I frequently encountered him in the Wheaton Public Library. He loved the beauty of sacred scriptures and the poetry and lyricism of the English language. He was also a consistent participant or attendee at interfaith programs at the Theosophical Society in Wheaton. He will be missed. My deepest condolences to his surviving family members.

I have known Ted for over 12 years and consider him to be a close friend, whom I will miss. Ted and I have had innumerable conversations on spiritual and practical matters over the years. Ted impressed me with his strong sense of justice and equality, his keen intellect, and his dedication to service.

Ted joined the Bahá'í Faith about 10 years ago (I am also a member of the Bahá'í Faith.) Ted was active in the communities in the area. Ted and I also participated in several activities with the Theosophical Society.

We will be hosting a memorial service for Ted on April 11, 2021, at 4:00 pm CDT via Zoom. Members of the Bahá'í Faith, the Theosophical Society, and others in the area whom Ted had touched will be in attendance. We will be recording this memorial service and will be happy to share with his family.

A fellow member of the Prairie State Humanists, I ran into Ted all over the place from Oak Brook library poetry readings (where he contributed one of his favorites) to Christ Church Oak Brook concerts (where he regularly lectured the minister on various topics). I found him to be funny and often wise, especially when he chastised the city of Wheaton for opening their meetings with a prayer (separation of church and state). He lived what he believed and was a model for all of us.

I always introduced him to people as my former baseball coach. Over the years I would usually run into him downtown Wheaton, most of the time at the post office. He would usually bluntly tell me what he thought of Wheaton and current events. He was very smart and I always enjoyed our discussions.

How grateful I am for the inquiring mind of Ted. After meditation, he frequently visited the library at the Science of Spirituality in recent years and would engage in lively discussions or read quietly. We will miss him.
Condolences to the family.

Mr. Utchen gave dictionaries to many of my students in Glen Ellyn over the years. My own children still have the dictionaries they received from him in 3rd grade. Thank you, Mr. Utchen, for giving our children the gift of knowledge and resourcefulness! May you rest in peace.

Ted was a driving force of the Dictionary Project. His wit and wisdom and love for humanity enriched our organization for 18 years. We loved Ted and miss him. He educated everyone he met. He truly understood the power of words and made learning fun for everyone by teaching us how to play with words.

You, Ted Utchen, served the community well, making an impact in many people. Over many years as "The Dictionary Man" you left an indelible impression of the importance of correct vocabulary and spelling to thousands of third graders in three cities by giving each child their own dictionary. Sandy and I will miss our occasional dinners and Dixieland jazz concerts. I will miss our continual bantering over politics, religion and vocabulary. Rest well my friend.

Always kind. Always generous. Always willing to share his wisdom. Looking back on our conversations, it's easy to see how passionate he was about sharing his knowledge to help all of us become better people in our own right. I was looking forward to catching up with him when the pandemic restrictions eased up. Wherever you are, Ted, I hope you're enjoying some great Dixieland Jazz!

I remember Theodore, or as we called him Mr. Utchen (privately The Dictionary Man) as a very passionate person especially pertaining to the dictionary. He came to our school district every year to talk about the importance of the dictionary with our third grade students.
He was so very patient with the children and you could see the joy in his heart when he was in the classroom. We looked forward to seeing him every year!
My thoughts go out to his family during this sad time.

Thankful for the never-ending stories about the friends and family members that he loved to talk about and the many perspectives of history that were bestowed upon us during each visit. Very thankful for all the lessons he's taught me over my life - being proud of who you are and where you come from, the importance of hard work and dedication, being attentive to the most minuscule of details, the value of understanding that process is just as important as result. Just a few lessons among many that I've been taught. Glad to know you are at peace, Grampa. Good thoughts being sent your way

Ted has been a revered member of Humanists of West Suburban Chicagoland, now called Prairie State Humanists, over decades. He always has an astute vantage to share on so many issues. His presense will remain with us. Do keep nd share his file of secular meditations, benedictions etc for the start of public meetings -- written by him.
Our hearts are with you!
