James R. Bowens Sr.

James R. Bowens Sr. of Coatesville James R. Bowens, Sr., 96, passed away on Jan. 21, 2014 at Neighborhood Hospice, West Chester. Born in Wilson, N.C., he was the son of the late Jacob and Flosie Bowens, and the husband of the late Mae Bowens. He was a graduate of Wilson area schools and attended Rocky Mount, N.C. Trade School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he served as a medic. Following his honorable discharge, he worked as a machinist at the former Lukens Steel for over 40 years, and was also an investor in real estate. He is survived by his daughter, Shirley Maybanks Bowens of Brooklyn, N.Y., his sister, grandchildren, and his special friend W. Dallas Johnson, along with many relatives and friends. He was also predeceased by two sons, Marshall Bowens and James Bowens II; three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1st, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 800 Coates St., Coatesville. Family and friends may pay their respects from 9 until 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Interment New Evergreen Cem., Coatesville. Arrangements by Brickus Funeral Home.
