Joan Stanton Obituary

Joan Gwendolyn Stanton - Born January 12, 1937 and went to live with her Lord October 18, 2021.

Joan was born in Roanoke, Virginia, to parents John William Stanton and AnnieMay Shelor Stanton. Her high school years were busy, as she was a cheerleader for Jefferson High School. She was an exceptional student, finishing her education with a Doctorate in Psychology from Vanderbilt University. Her undergraduate and Master's degrees were in Elementary Education from William and Mary University. She taught elementary school for over thirty years, her first job being with military children overseas. Her love for traveling took her to Russia, Bermuda and Europe. She also worked with many international students, helping them learn to speak English. This passion of hers helped to establish the English as a Second Language organization in Falls Church, Virginia.

Joan was a strong, independent woman, devoting her retirement years to worshiping her Savior at Second Presbyterian Church, playing bridge, and visiting friends. Learning of fifth generation relative, Daniel Shelor, a Captain in the Revolutionary War, she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Joan leaves a brother, Carl Richard Stanton; sister-in-law, Laura Stanton; nieces, Janet Stanton Moffitt, Christy Stanton Young, Temple Stanton Harding, Gwendolyn Stanton Whitfield, and their husbands; and several great nephews and nieces.

A visitation for Joan will be held Monday, October 25, 2021 from 9:00 AM until the funeral service at 10:00 AM, at MEMPHIS FUNERAL HOME, 5599 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38119. Graveside committal service will immediately follow at Memphis Memory Gardens, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Road, Memphis, TN 38134.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
