Morgan Ramsey Obituary
Morgan Edwin Ramsey, Sr aka Deacon Eddie Ramsey, aka Edwin Ramsey, CPA, aka Eddie Ramsey, Square Dance Caller, and affectionately known by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great granddaughter as "The Great and Mighty Grumps" died in his home on January 14, 2025, at the age of 87 surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 30, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee to Morgan "Teany" Jones Ramsey and Kathryne "Kitty" Louise Prewett Ramsey. Eddie graduated from Christian Brothers College High School Division in 1955 and briefly attended Memphis State University. During his time there, he participated in men's cheerleading, theatre, the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and appeared on the local television show "Dance Party."
Eddie and his high school sweetheart Sarah Ann "Sally" Merritt married August 30, 1957. They had four children: Morgan Edwin "Rusty" Jr, Kenneth (Kenny) Merritt (Peggy), Sarah Ann "Sandi" Ramsey McNeely (Keith Green), James "Jamey" Franklin (Desiree). Eddie was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Eloise Ramsey Bjornsen, and one great grandchild, Trinity LaShea Ramsey. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sally, his 4 children,11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter as well as nephews, nieces, and many cousins.
Eddie worked alongside his father until he received his PA Certification in 1964. In 1966, Eddie added his CPA Certification which led to the creation of M. Edwin Ramsey, CPA, and dedicated his career to private practice in bookkeeping and tax preparation. Eddie was a member of the TN Association of Accountants where he served on the Board of Directors for the Memphis Chapter. He also served on the Board of Governors for the National Society of Public Accountants. Eddie provided numerous Educational Seminars for small business owners through the Memphis Chamber of Commerce. He was also a regular Co-Host on AM 990 "One for the Money" talk show with Mike Stein. In 2010, Eddie partnered with his grandson, David Ramsey who continues the business today as Ramsey Accounting Services, PC.
Eddie had a lifelong passion for Modern Western Square Dance which was introduced to him in the 1950s by his parents. In the early 1970s, he and Sally joined the Pistols and Petticoats Square Dance Club. In 1972, Eddie began his calling career and founded the Spurs and Saddles Square Dance Club in Germantown, TN, which thrived until his retirement in 2017. He and Sally were founders of a demonstration team known as the Precisionares, Eddie held leadership positions in the Greater Memphis Square and Round Dance Association, co-founded the Tennessee State Association of Square and Round Dance Clubs, and was active in organizations such as CallerLab and ContraLab. Eddie called for various local organizations, churches, parties, and once called a square for tractors. He continued this tradition with his family and traveled across the United States and Europe, calling and dancing at festivals, conventions, and on cruise ships.
In addition to his professional career and square dancing, Eddie answered a higher calling when in 2000, he was ordained a deacon in the Memphis Catholic Diocese while being a member of St. Patrick Church. In 2009, Eddie was transferred to St. Peter Catholic Church where he served as the Spiritual Director for the RCIA Program. He enjoyed many teaching moments with the little children and loved standing outside after Mass to receive hugs from his parishioners.
The family would like to thank all the healthcare workers from Gentiva Hospice and Right at Home Care Service for the kind, loving, and compassionate care that Eddie received especially in his final days at home.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 19,2025 at Canale Funeral Directors, 2700 Union Avenue Extended from 3pm to 5 pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 20,2025 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 190 Adams at 1:00 pm. with reception to follow at church ("Ya'll can eat now!").
