Benjamin BOYD Obituary

HAMPTON - Benjamin Frank Boyd departed this life on Saturday morning, Jan. 14, 2012, at Sentara Heart Hospital.
He was born in Lawrenceville, Va., Oct. 23, 1927. Frank was the youngest son of Mr. B. A. and Mrs. Gracie N. Boyd.
Frank completed public schools and graduated from St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, with a State Teachers Certificate in 1951. There he pursued his interests in history and sports as an accomplished baseball and basketball player. After completing college, he proudly served in the United States Army from 1951-1954 with tours in the states and in Germany, then attained the rank of Major in the United States Army Reserves.
Frank was a Peninsula resident since 1955 and came to work at Fort Eustis as a civilian. In 1968, he decided to move his family to Germany, where he first became a Comptroller at the Boebligen Plant in Boebligen, Germany. He then held a civilian position as a Logistics Officer in the Dependent School System in Stuttgart, Germany from 1968-1974. He returned to Fort Eustis in 1974 where he worked in the 7th Transportation Group, DPTMSEC and the U. S. Army Transportation Group as an Installation Unit Readiness Officer until he retired in 1994.
Frank joined St. Augustine's Episcopal Church and had been an active member of the Vestry as Senior Warden, sponsor of the Episcopal Youth Group, Treasurer of the Men's Club and member of the Budget Committee.
Frank had three major passions: his family, gardening and sports. He loved to swim, run races and make flowers, trees and vegetables grow. Also he loved people and especially children who always felt at ease in his presence.
He was a fifty plus member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and served many years as Financial Secretary of the Alpha Alpha Chapter.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Melvin W. Boyd; his parents; sisters, Bernice B. Benbow, Pauline Boyd, Gladys B. Hudson; brothers, Leon Boyd, William Boyd, Henry T. Boyd; and nephew, Wilbor Boyd.
Frank leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 45 years, Alberta C. Boyd; daughter, Paula B. Dell (Tyrone), Cameron, N.C.; grandson, Ronald M. Corbin; sisters, Dr. Flora B. Maclin (Murray), Teaneck, N.J., Maude B. Shelton, Philadelphia, Pa.; nieces, Patricia B. Hudgins, Philadelphia, Pa., Dr. Kim B. Leathers (the Rev. Terrence), Apex, N.C., Denise B. Capria (Al), Fla.; nephew, Warren Benbow, New York City, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Helen C. Harris (Judge George), Roanoke, Va.; brothers-in-law, Dr. Leslie M. Camm (Dr. Vivian), Lynchburg, Va., and Rodney M. Camm (Rochelle), Virginia Beach, Va.; a host of cousins, great nieces, great nephews and very close friends.
A funeral service will be held noon, Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 2515 Marshall Ave., Newport News. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by an Omega Psi Phi Fraternity memorial service and family visitation at 6 p.m. Mr. Boyd will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service at the church on Saturday.

Aunt Bert,

It hurt my heart to hear about the passing of Uncle Frank. He meant a lot to me and all of the "kids" in the neighborhood. He will be truly missed! May God put comfort and peace in your heart as you continue to live in his memory. I just wish I could do just one more flip down Gregory Court for him (my forty years won't allow it...lol). May God continue to Bless you! Love you and Uncle Frank dearly!

To the family of the Late Benjamin F. Boyd
Family Poem
Look Up!
Oh, you who love the Lord, Look up!
The battle has been won! No matter what befalls you here..
The best is yet to come!
Though pain may rack your body now, and all earths' comfort cease, lean on God's everlasting Arms, and he will give you peace.
Look up beyond the shadows drear to Christ-God's shining Son,remembering that on Heaven's shore,
"The Best is yet to come!"

To The Boyd Family, I was saddened to hear of the loss of my dear friend, my running partner back over 30 years ago, patron on my bus trips, and one who planted flowers in my front yard prior to my wedding day in June 1981. He was a true friend and dedicated to the well being of his family. The memories will never be forgotten but always treasured. I Thank God for allowing our paths to cross in this life. Be encouraged, Trust God, and think on the good things because Mr.Boyd is at peace now.

Dear Bert, Paula, Ronald & Boyd Family,
My prayers are with you as you managed through this very sad time. I'll remember Frank as one of the easiest souls to truly enjoy being around. I love this verse from Emily Dickerson's poem and hope it gives you comfort:

Because I could not stop for Death—
He kindly stopped for me—
The Carriage held but just Ourselves—
And Immortality.

God will take care of you!

Dear Bert, Paula, and family:

Julius and I remember the good times and laughter with Frank when we lived across the street from him on Cornelius Drive. Once he even played a joke on us by calling Ruth to say she'd won the P.C.H. Sweepstakes ---only she recognized his voice! Frank babysat our first three children while our fourth was being delivered during a blizzard. He was a truly special friend, and he will be deeply missed.
