David Cupp Obituary
October 7, 1949 - July 19, 2024
David Gene Cupp, former news director and co-anchor of WVIR-TV in Charlottesville, VA, passed away on July 19, 2024, in McKinney, TX. He received dozens of awards for journalistic integrity and storytelling throughout his 25-year career with NBC29, and subsequently enjoyed a second career as a senior lecturer at UNC Chapel Hill. David earned an MFA from UVA and spent many seasons onstage at Heritage Repertory Theater. Donations are encouraged for the O'Donnell Brain Institute at UTSW to advance Alzheimer's research.
A celebration of life is planned for August.

Dave Cupp will never be forgotten in Charlottesville. A informative part of our day for so many years, always with grace and integrity.

In almost 60 years of my work life I must of had at least 20 bosses. Beyond any doubt Dave Cupp was #1, the best I´ve ever known. I was Dave´s secretary at NBC 29 news in Virginia. He was thoughtful, creative, fair minded, serious and yet fun. Condolences to his family, he will be missed.

I was David's care giver for over a year, he had a smile and personality that lit up any room. Our time sept together was taking walks, going to the art classes they had at the building, playing pool, reading, reading outload of jokes from Dad jokes books. David was a joy to be around and take care of. We would often sing and David had a beautiful voice, But David also had a laugh that you would not forget. My sympathy to Dave's family. I met Dave when he moved to Virginia and one of my bosses at the time, Art Greene, brought him here after he director a play out west. Such a delightful individual and a great NBC29 news director and co-director.

I worked with Dave at Dateline 29 News for 7 years in the 1990´s. Wish I could have stayed longer. Best News Director I ever had in my career. I will miss him.
