Dennis E. "Skip" Hannan passed away at his home in the wee hours of Thursday, May 28, 2015, with his family by his side. His diagnosis of cancer just two months before provided too little time for him to share his wonderful warmth and humor with all those who loved him. With his family relentlessly watching over him during his illness he was so happy to hear the many names of those who asked for him and who loved him. Skip was a force in all he did and will be missed by many friends and co-workers and clients. He leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Katharine Cole Hannan of Scottsville, his cherished children, daughter, Margaret Julia Hannan of Portland, Maine and his son, Andrew Walker Hannan and Walker's fiancé, Erica Martina Humes, both of Charlottesville.Skip owned and was proprietor of Mechums River Security Concepts. He started his business 25 years ago and built it steadily over the years into a name his customers could trust. Skip was proud to have wonderful employees work with him for all those years and leaves them to carry on in his tradition of sincerity, warmth and professionalism.Skip Hannan was born July 13, 1950, in Medford, Massachusetts, to Dennis Patrick Hannan and Vera Mountain Hannan, both of Medford, Massachusetts who preceded him in death. Skipper was their only child. He once said he learned to make people laugh to overcome his shyness when his parents had their many friends over to their house. To the end, Skip's witty quips and hysterical stories charmed all who came into contact with him but never overshadowed the generous spirit at his core.Gifted at an early age in athletics he played baseball throughout his childhood and at Medford High School from which he graduated in 1968. He was a lifelong fan of the Red Sox and the Patriots. In the more recent past, Skip was an excellent tennis player and always up for a challenge with anyone who would play him. He completed two years of college before setting out to find his fortune. In 1988 he started his successful business. Eventually, it afforded him the luxury of a sweet cottage on a cove in Maine where he kept his beloved boat, "Inconceivable". He loved being there with his family and friends around him, entertaining everyone and embracing every moment. It is unimaginable that Skip is gone from our lives. His family wishes to thank the scores of people who have shared their own stories of Skip. Please continue to keep his legacy alive with laughter and your memories of his incredible stories.A Celebration of His Life will be held at his family home in Scottsville on Sunday, June 7, 2015.
