Marvie Walsh Obituary

Marvie Alexis Walsh, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, died on March 30, 2023, in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was 86.

Marvie was born in Askam, Pennsylvania, where she grew up alongside her two sisters, Yvonne Coursen and Barbara Nadwodney Grulke and her brother, Frank Nadwodney (deceased). She graduated from Hanover High School in 1953 and married Gerald Joseph Walsh (deceased) in 1957 in Chardon, Ohio. They raised two sons, Gerald Joseph Walsh Jr. and James Jason Walsh in Cleveland, Ohio. Her children remember a loving, fun, funny and adventurous Mom who frequently took them traveling all across the United States including Hawaii and many Caribbean Islands. They also frequently traveled abroad to Italy, France and Ireland. At home, she shared and nurtured her love of gardening, especially numerous species of flowers and her ever impressive, prize-winning tomatoes which were always among the most colorful and bountiful plants in her garden.

Marvie enjoyed a career with United Airlines and passed her love of travel to her children and grandchildren. She was especially fond of visiting England and took pride in learning its rich history. After she retired, Marvie continued to travel the world with her best friends, including trips to New Zealand, Egypt, Jordan and Italy. Marvie was an avowed bibliophile and member of many book clubs over the years. She collected books on everything from history to poetry, short stories and classical novels and was a lifelong supporter of public libraries. She had a mischievous yet warm sense of humor, was a master of crossword puzzles and never forgot a family member or friend's birthday, and was always popular at such celebrations by singing "The Birthday Song."

In addition to her sons and sisters, Marvie is survived by her five grandchildren, Elizabeth, James Jason, Jerry, Maggie, and Katherine and three great-grandsons, Philip, Makoa, and Sean. She was a cherished aunt and great-aunt to many nephews and nieces and is remembered by her many friends for her love, devotion, and lively sense of humor.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather for a Funeral Mass on Saturday, April 22, 2023, 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 401 Alderman Road, Charlottesville, Va. A Memorial Mass of Celebration will also be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023, 10 a.m. at St. Leo's Holy Rosary Church, 33 Manhattan St., Ashley, Pennsylvania.

Your obituary is such a lovely tribute to your wonderful mother, "Marvelous Marvie".
She is missed at OLOP and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I absolutely adored her and was so blessed to have her as my mother´s table mate. I fell in love with her instantly. I also knew how strong her faith was the first day we met.

I loved all of her quotes and rhymes at the dinner table with my mother and her other table mates and the joy she brought!!

Marvelous Marvie. I sure wish I could´ve known her longer
