Nancy Corwith Obituary

Nancy Foster Corwith, 78, of Charlottesville, Virginia passed away on November 12, 2023, at University of Virginia Hospital. She was surrounded by her son and close friends. Nancy was born February 28, 1945 to Foster Howell Corwith and Ruth Odelle Hudson Corwith. She is survived by her son, Zachary Corwith Hurr, her sister Jane Hudson Corwith, her brother Foster Howell Corwith II and his children.

Nancy grew up in Southampton, NY where she graduated as valedictorian of Southampton High School class of 1963. She completed her undergraduate degree in French Studies and Master's degree in Middle School Education at The University of North Carolina. After moving to the Charlottesville area, she joined the staff of University Montessori School in 1995. Nancy possessed an innate ability to reach each student through their unique learning style. She was selfless with her time and volunteered by teaching English as a Second Language and at Building Goodness Foundation.

Nancy loved nature and being outdoors. Hiking and camping in the mountains or river trips with friends was where she found contentment. She inherited a love of gardening from her father, and would have a vegetable garden whenever possible. With compassion and positivity as inherent strengths, Nancy's life was full of happiness and joy, so abundant in these traits, she could share them with all those around her.

Nancy was and still is the inspirational educator I have met. Her respect and compassion for children and their families guided every one of her words and actions at UMS. I miss talking to her about everything. Pax Christi, Dear Nancy.

Nancy was the true center of our children's lives at UMS and I am so sorry to hear that she is no longer with us. She was so respectful of the beauty and needs of each individual child, a deeply loving and gentle presence. Her spirit will stay with us always, and we are deeply grateful for our time together with her. She is one of those few, extraordinary people who do truly stay with you. Heartfelt condolences to her family, and her son especially, about whom she often spoke with such love.

Nancy was my sister. Because I live on the west coast with a number of health issues, our in person get togethers were quite infrequent over the past several years. But there was always the phone, which we used often to communicate. Whenever I was feeling a little down because things were not going as well as I thought they should be going, I would give her a call. Her great knowledge on practically any subject and positive attitude on life even during her own recent health battle always gave me a brighter outlook on what life held in store for me. She was the kind of sister any man would like to have. I will miss her immensely.
