Stephen McLean Obituary

Stephen Thomas McLean of Charlottesville, Virginia died peacefully at home on September 1, 2023, surrounded by his family. Born on October 26, 1950 in Charlottesville, he was the third of seven children born to Dr. Walter Copley and Margaret Kleppinger McLean.

Proud to be a product of the Charlottesville public school system, Steve graduated from Lane High School. He subsequently went to Princeton University for four of the best years of his life where he played varsity baseball, joined The Cap and Gown Club, and made lifelong friends. After graduation he spent a year working his way across Europe and Asia with friends and considered it one of his top life experiences.

Steve found his way back to Charlottesville in 1973 and discovered his lifelong passion for land and real estate. He co-founded McLean Faulconer Inc. in 1980 and remained President until his retirement in August of this year. The company grew to become the leading real estate firm in central Virginia. Steve loved working with his clients and dedicated his professional life to devotedly serving them. He established deep and personal relationships with many of his clients.

A member of the Board of Directors of the Charlottesville/Albemarle Board of Realtors, Steve served as treasurer, vice president and president. He chaired the Board of Directors of the Charlottesville/Albemarle Chamber of Commerce for 10 years. In addition, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors appointed Steve to the Acquisition of Conservation Easements Committee, a position he held since the inception of the committee. At the state level, he held a four-year appointment by Governor Allen to the Virginia Real Estate Board.

Steve joined the Monticello Cabinet, which recognizes those individuals whose enlightened philanthropy ensures and enhances Monticello's dual mission of preservation and education. He also served two terms on the board of James Madison's Montpelier. At Farmington Country Club he held the positions of treasurer and president and was on the Board of Directors for two terms. Steve was past Chairman of the University of Virginia Physicians Group, as well as a founding member of Charlottesville Tomorrow. Dedicated to his community, he was proud to be a founding member and former Chairman of the Board of the YMCA, which he identified as a critical necessity for the Charlottesville community. He had accepted tenure as a member of the Board of Directors of the Botanical Garden of the Piedmont just prior to his death.

His professional accomplishments notwithstanding, Steve will be remembered for his charm, optimism, wonderful sense of humor, intelligence, unparalleled work ethic, athleticism, ability to do just about anything and everything, and his genuine desire to help as many people as he could.

Most of all, Steve loved and cherished his family and friends. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife of 44 years, his children, and his grandchildren. He discovered the magic of grandparenthood three years ago, and was gifted with a namesake, Poppy McLean Hughes, just two weeks before his death. He was joyously anticipating the birth of his sixth grandchild in December. Steve's paddle, tennis, hunting, golfing, fishing and skiing friends were so important to him, and he pursued those interests with gusto! Spending time at his family farm in Greene County gave him great pleasure, especially if it involved machinery - he could operate any piece of equipment.

Steve was predeceased by his father and his older sister, Patricia Ann McLean. He is survived by his wife, Caroline Wilson McLean, and their three children and their families: Wilson Copley McLean; Margaret (Meg) McLean Dagenhart (James) and their children, Coco and Henry; Elizabeth McLean Hughes (Reagen) and their children, Harrison, Wilson and Poppy; his mother, Peggy; and his siblings, Dr. W. Copley McLean Jr. (Merri), Mark Andrew McLean (Ann), Peter Kleppinger McLean (Carol Ann), Martha McLean Rodgers (Brad), Christopher Laubach McLean (Ashley), along with 25 nieces and nephews.

The burial will be private. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 30th at 4 p.m. at the family's home. Condolences may be sent to the family either directly or to https://jfbellfuneralservices.com/obituaries. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Walter Copley and Margaret Kleppinger McLean Scholarship Fund (recognizing medical students exhibiting compassionate, patient-centered care), c/o UVA Medical School Foundation, P.O. Box 37963, Boone, IA 50037 (https://www.uvamedalum.org/giving/give-online/); Brooks Family YMCA, 151 McIntire Park Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22902 (https://piedmontymca.org/about-brooks); or Botanical Garden of the Piedmont, P.O. Box 6224, Charlottesville, VA 22906 (https://piedmontgarden.org/).

Sincere condolences to Steve’s family. He was a true professional and leader in his field. Steve did it the right way and took time to help others. I, like so many, have lost a mentor and good friend. He left our profession better than he found it.

To the McLean Family:
I am so very sorry to learn about Steve's illness and his passing. My memories of Steve cover our grade school and high school years during which Lee and I were classmates, and Steve was one year behind. Dr. and Mrs. McLean were always so involved in all of our lives, particularly as elementary school students, so it easy to see where the values that Steve displayed in his life and in his professional career came from. Later, while Steve and I had less contact, his work and his fine reputation often came up in banking circles. He has served our community and his chosen profession, and his family so well. I am very proud to have known Steve, and my heartfelt condolences go out to his entire family as they deal with his loss. God bless and Godspeed Steve!

It was such a privilege to have met Steve and known him if only for a short time. He embodied a gentility and shared his love for Charlottesville with my husband and I while showing us properties and neighborhood. Wishing comfort for his family and hope they know what impact he had even in small interactions like ours.

I had such a wonderful experience coming to know and work closely with Steve when we each served on the Chamber of Commerce board of directors so many years ago now. Steve was so very bright, compassionate, dedicated, friendly, and so interested in everything. He loved deeply his community, his family, and his profession. In interacting with Steve, a person would be drawn to his friendly personality and his very genuine interest in you as an individual. He was a very kind and special man. He walked a giant in our community and in his profession. His contribution are many and will be long standing over the coming years. He did good and well in life. After a meaningful and richly lived life, Steve rests now in God´s good care. In prayers and sympathy, William Kehoe.

I was introduced to Steve some 33 years ago at the Rumson (NJ) Country Club Member-Guest Golf Tournament where he played with his partner and Princeton classmate Bill McCarter for 40 consecutive years. I looked forward to seeing him at that event every year - it was one of those unique friendships where we only had one weekend every year to reacquaint but I always welcomed the opportunity to catch up with this true Virginia Gentleman. He will be missed but fondly remembered by all of us who were lucky to know him.

Condolences and sympathy to Caroline and family. Got to know Steve almost immediately after moving to Charlottesville in 1976. Many fun interactions with him over the years especially the high-energy, weekly pickup basketball games with Steve and Wilson and many other great guys at STAB gym. Intelligent, engaging conversations on a wide range of topics, including investments. He was a great family man and a wonderful representative of the community in many ways. May his memory always be a blessing. --Dan Friedman

Steve epitomized the concept of "Virginia gentleman" in the very best of ways. Over 30 years we worked together, I found him always good humoured, courteous, thoughtful, and helpful to others . And despite a relaxed demeanor, he was one of the hardest workers I've ever known, always ready to help. We will all miss his smiling face and easy laughter.

When I was nine in little league baseball I came up to the plate to bat against twelve year old Steve. His pitching skills were well known and I was shaking a bit. I managed a hit to right field but was so surprised that I was almost thrown out at first base.

Dear McLean Family: I was so sorry to hear of Stephen's death. I have such fond memories of us as neighbors and all of us kids playing together. I fell going down the hall in school one day and my teacher sent Stephen to the office to get the principal. Steven was so kind and concerned for me that day. I will always remember Steven looking out for me!

In my family of men we discussed folks of value in our lives but as men we placed one top class ...the Prince . Steve was in men´s terms
A Prince of a guy.
In times of stress and trouble he took control of the boat with words of solid comfort . " I will get this done. Do not worry"
He was special and for me he will be forgotten, NEVER .

Very sorry to hear of another Lane High School alumni passing this Summer. Wow, 73 is much too soon to be leaving this world. Steve was probably 2 years ahead of me at Lane and we never knew each other but I remember him as a good looking, athletic, popular guy; sort of reminded me of Troy Donahue. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. God bless!

Growing up in Charlottesville in the 50's and 60's with Steve and the other McLeans from Blue Ridge Road is a favorite childhood memory. After college took us different paths, Page reconnected with Steve often on real estate matters, including some very large farm transactions. Steve was a warm friend to everyone who touched his life, as was Caroline. Service to the community and to Farmington were hallmarks of Steve's career. We will think of Steve often and miss him. Condolences to Caroline, Wilson, Meg, Liz, Peg and the rest of the McLeans. Charlottesville has lost a legend.

I feel like I have known Steve my entire time here in Charlottesville which began in 1977 just after Steve started his stellar company. My last visit with Steve is when he joined my client and I on a long hike through one of his land listings and I was impressed how much joy he got in sharing his knowledge and time with both of us. I had hoped to see more of Steve but because of COVID and the twilight of both our careers it never did happen. I hope and trust his family, friends and colleagues remain deep in each others hearts via Steve´s life.
