Ted Burns Obituary

Ted Michael Burns, 55, passed away on June 12, 2022, at his home in Charlottesville, Va., with his family by his side after a courageous 9-year battle with a rare form of cancer.

Ted was born on September 2, 1966, in Kansas City, Mo., to Ann Virginia (Murray) and Dennis Dean Burns as the second of three sons (Mark, Jeffrey). He grew up in Prairie Village, Kansas, and graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School. Ted attended the University of Kansas, earning a Bachelor of Science degree and an MD.

On September 3, 2000, Ted married Bonnie Fronfelter, a native of Waverly, Va., and a University of Virginia graduate. Ted often described her as "the captain of his ship." They have three wonderful children, Charlie (20), Elizabeth (18), and Sarah (17), all of whom he adored. He was a devoted husband and father, and cherished his time with his family.

Ted was a dedicated fan of the Kansas Jayhawks, Virginia Cavaliers, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Kansas City Royals. He passed his love of the Jayhawks on to Elizabeth, who has assumed the mantle of most ardent Kansas fan in the immediate family. Ted cherished watching movies with Charlie and giving him feedback on his writing for The Cavalier Daily, the UVA student newspaper, as well as discussing and debating current events. He was awed by Elizabeth's passion and talent for soccer, at which she consistently excelled. He loved attending Sarah's games and orchestra concerts, as well as hearing about her life and schoolwork.

He is remembered for his unwavering curiosity and interest in other people. When locked in discussion with any of his three children, he always tried to cut to the core of their interests and lives. He was known to ask them questions about many topics, wanting to understand their perspectives. The same was true when he would talk with his or his children's friends. He always wanted to learn more about each of us.

He completed his medical residency in neurology at the University of Virginia, continuing with a fellowship in neuromuscular disease and electromyography. He followed with a second fellowship in peripheral nerve disease at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Ted began his professional career at Lahey Clinic in Boston as Senior Staff Neurologist and as a member of the consulting staff at Boston Children's Hospital.

After two years he returned to Charlottesville and the UVA Medical Center. He became director of the Residency and Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship training programs, Medical Director of the Neurology EMG Laboratory, head of the Neuromuscular Division, and was soon named full professor. He had a passion for educating residents and other doctors. His battle with cancer gave him an opportunity to train doctors from the perspective of a patient including the importance of kindness as an essential element of treatment. His educational skills were recognized at UVA with membership in the Academy of Distinguished Educators, the Dean's Teaching Award of Excellence, and the Master Educator Award (2006 and 2018). In 2008, he received a Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor Chair. In 2013 the Kansas University Medical Alumni Association recognized Ted with the Early Career Achievement in Medicine Award. The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine presented Ted the Distinguished Researcher Award in 2018.

Throughout Ted's career he was dedicated to clinical research, particularly the assessment and treatment of myasthenia gravis (MG). He saw the need for improved MG outcome measures for clinical practice. He developed and validated the use of the MG Composite and MG Quality of Life scales. The scales have been translated and validated into more than a dozen languages and are recognized worldwide as the standard for clinical trials. In 2010, the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America presented him with its Doctor of the Year award.

As early as 2006 when podcasts were in their infancy, Ted envisioned their potential for educating and informing physicians, patients, and families about the latest medical developments. He created and developed the Neurology Podcast series that was adopted by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). Podcasts featured 30-minute interviews with prominent researchers and personalities. In 2018 he created the popular Neurology Minute, a series of 2-3 minute podcasts. Ted personally conducted hundreds of interviews and was central to the formation of the active AAN podcast organization of today. The podcast influence is vast with each podcast series exceeding two million downloads in 180 countries.

Ted was a passionate advocate for rational drug pricing. He mobilized efforts by fellow physicians to protest predatory pricing, and the effect in some cases was to roll back or suspend such practices.

Perhaps Ted's most distinguished honor came in 2020 when fellow colleagues with support of the American Brain Foundation/AAN established the Ted M. Burns Humanism in Neurology Award. This endowed award, which will always bear his name, recognizes annually a neurology professional who is a gifted educator, one who delivers compassionate patient-centered care, and is passionate in educating future generations of neurologists to do the same.

Ted had a wide variety of interests beyond medicine. He excelled in academics and sports and was named his high school Scholar-Athlete. He was a 3-year letter winner in basketball and baseball. He was the shortstop on the 1984 Kansas high school baseball state champion team. His interest in wine led to the founding of the Williams Corner Wine company by Ted and two partners. In 2009 Ted was a finalist for a James Beard award for one of his interviews, "Thomas Jefferson and Wine," for the wine podcast GrapeRadio.

Ted is survived by his wife, Bonnie F. Burns, and children, Charles Griffin, Elizabeth Ward, and Sarah Ann, all of Charlottesville. Also surviving are parents, Dennis and Ann Burns of Leawood, Kan.; brothers, Mark Roger Burns (Sara) of Dubuque, Iowa, and Dr. Jeffrey Murray Burns (Jennifer) of Leawood, Kan., and 16 nephews and nieces.

The family is grateful for the kind, generous, and professional care Ted received at the UVA Medical Center.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Ted's Life on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 3:30 p.m., University of Virginia Chapel, 200 McCormick Road, Charlottesville, Va. Dr. Ted Burns was my Doctor starting in 2005 for approximately 2 1/5 years. He was a wonderful caring man and always took the time to listening to you. We would even text back & forth. After I was no longer a patient, he text me to say he had cancer for the 2nd time.
I will always remember you.
RIP SIR

Dr. Burns was a godsend for me. I will never forget the hours he spent with me one morning, to help diagnose me with a rare autoimmune disease. Having spent months with other doctors and progressively getting worse, Dr. Burns diagnosed me and created a treatment plan that has helped me improve so much. He was one of those rare doctors, who viewed you as a person first. He genuinely cared and had a true desire to help. I am so sad to hear of his passing. I am truly blessed to have known him and my thoughts and prayers go out to all his family and friends.

Ted and I hung out in the summers during middle school. We competed as doubles tennis partners and overachieved, thanks to him. He was a blast to be around, and kind to everyone. We had time to burn, and laughed very hard about dumb things. There was nobody like Ted.

I'm honored to have known Doc Ted, to have been his patient, to have experienced his compassion, I feel for his family. I want them to know what an amazing human being Doc was, our move to Charlottesville was partly because of him....we spoke about all kinds of things during our visits, he loved his family, such a down to earth soul this dude was. Thanks for everything you did for us Ted!

I was mortified when I heard about Ted's passing. My heart really goes out to his family. I worked with Ted over the years, as a UVA social worker, and I so admired his demeanor and knowledge and compassion. Easy going is an overused phrase but it's true. His dedication to his patients and especially as I observed in the UVA ALS Clinic, was extraordinary. HE was extraordinary in so many ways. He will be missed. He is missed. I know his family and friends understand what a wonderful person Ted is.

I just read that Dr. Ted had passed from his cancer.
I'm so saddened to hear that he had passed. What a wonderful man he was and a Doctor to.
I loved this guy even though he was from Kansas, lol!
He was my Doctor for several years when they thought I had ALS back in the late 1990's but, thank the good Lord I didn't.
Dr. Burns was the best that anyone could ask for to just talk to.
Even after I was no longer a patient, we continued to text each other. The last was when he told me his cancer had came back.
He was such a young family man with young children.
My condolences to his wife and 3 children whom he loved dearly.
God bless such a wonderful man.
RIP Dr. Ted, we all will miss you so much.

My sister and I attended school with the Burns children for the last several years, and between shared soccer games and CHS orchestra concerts, I had a couple of great conversations with Ted. I remember well the kindness and humility evident in all accounts of his life, even in our brief interactions. I'm also writing on behalf of my father, who I know received much comfort in speaking with Ted as he faced his own cancer diagnosis and treatment. Burns families, I wish all of you peace during this transition and joy in the memories of a really great guy.

Ted referred to me as one of his mentors, but I learned much more from him than he did from me. By his example, I became a more compassionate physician. Even today, his former patients ask about him, many years after he last saw them. He will be missed.

My condolences to Ted´s family and friends. I lived across the street from Ted, Mark and Jeff growing up in Prairie Village. They were a very nice family and Ted and his brothers were fun to play with growing up. Lost track of him and then saw him at KU. Ted accomplished so much. Very sad he passed at such a young age. My thoughts and prayers go to his family, friends and his parents.

Burns Families, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Ted to cancer.

Our families and memories go all the way back to the Ridgeview Elementary school days, field days, softball and basketball teams, etc.

While Ted excelled academically and athletically growing up, which separated us from some classes and teams, we made many memories in our younger years.

1.  While at Meadowbrook, Ted got ahold of a ton of the McDonalds Olympic game pieces.  It was the year that the Russians didn't participate. For every gold medal won by the USA, if you had that event piece, you get a free Big Mac.  Ted and I ate a 100 Big Macs that summer.  He loved dipping them in ketchup. Glad we got some exercise with our bikes to Corinth.

2.  6th grade, Ted would sometimes walk home with me over lunch to microwave 3 hot dogs each and then play a few intense games of Nerf basketball in the basement.

3.  Ted was always the field day softball throwing champion over the 50 yd track.  He could launch it.

It was great to read the impact of Ted's life on his family and others.  Blessings for your family as your hearts heal.

I grew up with Ted in Prairie Village and was in school with him from elementary through high school. He was always the best athlete in elementary school and thus always the one to beat at field day. He was the nicest guy, and never bullied or got a big head about his abilities, always just strove to be better. A great role model from the earliest days on. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time of loss and sorrow. As we say in the Navy - fair winds and following seas, Ted.

What a wonderful mentor, director, doctor and friend I found in Ted. He helped each person he met in some way, such a caring man. I'm blessed to have been able to work with and learn from Ted and not was it all about work, he also walked me through life lessons as well that I will never forget. Missing him daily and always will

Ted Burns was one of the most generous and humane people I know. Nine years ago, just before he was diagnosed with cancer himself, he offered me a large chunk of his precious time to meet with me about mine. He didn't even know me then, but he listened better than any doctor I had seen at that time and gave me sound advice. He went on to see my father in law for his rare disease and then offered advice to a friend in need. He was always so kind, warm, generous, humble. His deep love for his family was in every exchange we had. He was so proud of his kids, so in awe of Bonnie. I am so, so sorry for the Burns Family's loss. It is indeed profound. May his memory be a blessing to all.
