Mom wasn't known for her grand gestures or innovative ideas. She was at heart a simple woman who enjoyed the pleasures of hearth and home. She would rather read a good book than take a fancy trip, or watch her favorite TV show than mingle in a crowded room. People who do great things in life, or who excite our passions get sweeping eulogies or moving poems written about them. But it's people like mom, who require no accolades that keep our families and our world together.

Growing up she was the true strength of our family. Like many military spouses she took care of the family alone while dad was away. She shouldered this burden without complaint, and she never said "Wait till your father gets home". She took care of the issue herself!

One of her greatest accomplishments was probably putting up with three Lyons males in close proximity for years. My father and I had a turbulent relationship in my youth and she was stuck in the middle of all of the fireworks far too often. Yet she somehow managed to smooth things over and she is probably the only reason I stayed at home long enough to finish school.

One of my personal favorite bits of wisdom from mom has always been, "It would be a boring old world if everyone was the same". Mom expressed this message of tolerance and inclusion often, long before such things were part of the popular political and social Lexicon. Following this simple expression has made me a better man and helped guide me through the twists and turns that life inevitably brings to us all.

She will be dearly missed by those of us who knew and loved her.
