Mitch was a pleasure to work for and work with in the Commercial Testing Branch in the 4950th Test Wing. As a new test pilot in the 4950th, I relied on Mitch's test expertise and program guidance. Most of all, I appreciated his sense of humor and outlook - they were priceless. Mitch will be missed.

Mitch's smile and laugh could warm even a cold and gloomy day in Dayton. We had several fun trips together, one to the Sandy Beach Hotel in Barbados stands out especially with the four day slip before we even landed. When I needed advice for a demanding test at Edwards, I usually sought out Mitch first. "Get them to give you refueling time in the B-52 then your qualification tests will seem easy." He was right of course....smart, fun, an excellent pilot. My deepest sympathy.

I was Principal at Hamilton when Mitch was in school. I was sorry to read about the accident. Also, I lived only about a mile from where Mitch was raised and know the family well. My condolences to those who are left. May your thoughts be of the good times when Mitch was alive.

Mitch wore a lot of different hats, and I wish I could have experienced them all. I enjoyed the man I got to see the most, the Mitch at church every Sunday. My favorite story from the services was the one when he got saved. What a beautiful reassurance, knowing he is so happy with his Father. I LOVE YOU AUNT JUDY!!!!!

Dear Judy, Chris, Lisa and Mark,
Like so many of the people who have responded to this loss, you do not know me. Mitch was the "voice of reason" and "Hey, Don did you think of this", when I was an "old guy" Major in the 4950th Test Wing. My project, along with the late Pete Larkin, was the EC-18B. I started as an outsider from the "Glamour World" at Andrews. Mitch took the time to give me a very deep appreciation of the talents around me, and the scope of what I needed to do. From a ride together in the Antenna laced T-37 over Brush Creek MOA to a bit of the Tullamore Dew in "Chuck Yeager" bar after a long day at Edwards in the C-135, I proudly got to claim him as a friend. Only Mitch can appreciate that I had a flight on the day of the funeral. Not knowing you, does not diminish my admiration for the people that made Mitch the gentle giant that he was to all who knew him. May God grant you peace, in knowing Mitch loved all and all that he did.

Dearest Judy, Chris, Lisa and Mark,
There are no words to express what has happened and how senseless it is to all of us. In time, we will all get to where we need to be but in the meantime we share this scripture with you, "I can do all things through Christ who strenghtens me." One day at a time.... We love you and are here for each of you.

Judy and Cary Family,
I couldn't believe the news on July 30. All the care and love that went into assembly, check, and flight test of the Silver Bird by all Wright "B" Flyer Members to create a safe plane and Mitch was certainly actively involved. Though he was an accomplished test pilot, Mitch was right at home in the lobby helping youngsters fly the simulator and giving visitors that memorable ride in the Brown Bird. All of us volunteers at Wright "B" Flyer will miss Mitch. My condolances to you and your family.

Judy,
We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Words cannot adequately express how we feel, so I will quote someone I admire a great deal, "this stinks." We enjoyed game night in your home. You are both so gracious. Mitch will be missed by many. Please know that we are here if you need ANYTHING at all. May God give you His peace and strength in the days ahead. With much love,

August 4, 2011

Judy and family,
Words seem so inadequate today. Mitch always seemed larger than life to me. He would probably hate to hear that, but his uniqueness, his dedication, his intellect, and so much more put him head and shoulders above the rest. He was an outstanding leader and a man that just by being himself influenced and inspired so many, including my son. What an outstanding role model he was and will remain in his legacy of giving. You share in all the tributes to him, because of your unselfishness in sharing him with those he mentored and taught to be better than they ever thought they could be. In our hearts always!
Love to each of you, including Mitch - may God hold you in the hollow of His hand always, Lana Apana

Judy and families, May God bless you all and give comfort in this time of sorrow. I feel fortunate to having known Mitch as I worked closely with him at the Wright B. Aside from his duties as pilot and mine as one of the mechanics, we had many conversations about growing up on a farm and our Air Force experiences, as well as many other topics. Mitch is one of the finest individuals I have met in my career.

I'll never forget our flight together in the Wright B Flyer. I won the coveted Daedalian raffle at our annual dinner in the hangar. Boy, did he make it special! He let me do all four take-offs and landings and boy were the others jealous. He will surely be missed by all. You are in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless!

Kurt Rinke

August 3, 2011

Condolences to the family. Mitch was a great pilot and leader. As the XR lead in the SOF SPO he kept track of us Reservisits and supported us greatly. He'll be missed.

I am sorry to hear of your tragic loss. Orville would have been very proud of Mitch's work. I was close to Orville as a child and have remained close to the Wright Flyers in adulthood. In fact, I am mentioned on page 182 of Ann's book. You have my deepest sympathy. And may God bless.

Cary Family-I had the great pleasure of getting to know Mitch first through our Leadership Dayton class. To say he was a great guy and class act would be an understatement, but you know that. I am so saddened by your loss and the loss all of us who called Mitch a friend feel today. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and just know that Mitch will be greatly missed by his many friends and by the community.

August 3, 2011

Cary Family-
I had the privilege of getting to know Mitch through our Leadership Dayton Class in 2001. Our classmates are all in shock as he truly was so dear to us all. Comments from our group have ranged from "he was just a first class guy" to "I always looked forward to seeing him the most at our class gatherings" to "last time I saw him he was just messing around in the hangar".
Personally I admired him greatly and was so in awe of all that he knew and all he had done! Plus he was simply a joy to be around.
Mitch hosted a gathering for us once at the hangar and I am so lucky to have won the "raffle" that day which was a ride on the Wright B with him. What a memory, and what a man.
May God Bless and keep you all during this difficult time--

To the Cary Family,
Mitch was a true inspiration to us in the Air Force Propulsion community and he will be truly missed. He mentored our young employees and showed boundless integrity. Among his peers, Mitch was known to fight for decency and honor in everything we do. I am humbled to have worked with him, laughed with him, and learned from him how to uphold my own values in this sometimes crazy business. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Judy,

I worked for Mitch in HQ AFMC/DO a few years back. I appreciated his dry humor and common sense approach to things. When my youngest brother died Mitch was one of the first to offer his condolences and a helping hand if I needed it. What a wonderful human being he was. The entire Cary family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Judy,
I'm so sorry and I know that there is nothing I can say that will take the pain away. When I worked for Mitch in DO he was a good friend and boss. Judy and family
I have known Mitch since the early 80s when we assigned to the B-1B Program as Program Managers. We played basketball and volleyball together, socialized together and worked together since then on many projects from Propulsion to the Wright B Flyer activities. He was a great guy and would give the shirt off his back if you needed it! My latest memory of him was when he would fly the Wright B Flyer over Fairborn waiving and smiling to all the people as they looked up in amazement! We will all miss Mitch and will be praying for the family to get through this tragic time and that all the rest of us to look into our hearts to find how we can serve others as Mitch did!!

I worked for Mitch when we were both at the Special Operation Forces SPO at WPAFB, Oh. I never met a better human being and mentor. I met back up with Mitch, several year later, after I was assigned to Building 28 on base where Mitch also worked. On occasion I would visit his office and we would talk about aviation and his love for airplanes. I admired Mitch and will always remember him. God bless you. You and your family are in my prayers

August 2, 2011

Judy,
I worked with you and Mitch on the B-1 – where Mitch got me hooked on some of those darn Philosophy books he was always quoting – had to read them in self defense. Kept waking up at night going “I’ll bet that’s what that meant!”. I was surprised (but should not have been) to hear that he was working towards a degree in Theology – just didn’t fit the standard “golden arm” image. But then Mitch never cared about images – just the solid reality that was uniquely his own. We were all lucky to have known him. Blue skies to you and your family, my friend.

August 2, 2011

I met Mitch at AFMC around 1994. He was friendly and helpful when he had no need to be; he was far my superior. He always asked about my wife and my kids at a time my family had some health struggles. Mitch could hang out with pilots and not necessarily talk about airplanes (my wife particularly liked that). Flying was his passion, as it is for many of us, but he was to me a good man first. I will never forget his example. God bless him and his family.

Steve Larson

August 2, 2011

My sincere sympathy to Mitch's friends and family. As my supervisor for the past two years I gained a deep respect for one of the smartest and kindest professionals I had ever met. Mitch's recent interest in Theology was one that proved a great challenge to someone who seemed to always have the answer for just about everything. Beyond my own tears on Saturday, it gave me some comfort to know that life's most intriguing questions were answered this dreadful day for my dear friend Mitch Cary! Your special stories while seated on my trash-can will be missed deeply along with your unique sense of humor and thoughts on social justice. All I can say in parting is, "now you know, Mitch, now you know."

Eddie McAllister

August 1, 2011

I worked for Mitch in the Commercial Aircraft Test Branch of the 4050th Test Wing in the early 90's. I'll never forget Mitch's sense of humor and his humble expertise. The last time I saw him he shared his rekindled love of aviation and his activities with the Wright B flyer. Judy, words can never ease your pain and grief, but please know you are in the McAllister family's prayers and we share your loss. God Bless you and your family.

I flew with Mitch on TDY's at Edwards and at Wright Patterson when in the 4950th . As a Pilot and an Officer he was the best of the best. A great personality, easy going on the outside, all business when flying. A top shelf Air Force Test Pilot. A great Officer and a great Man, he will be missed, yet always remembered.

Judy,

Mitch was a great friend to all who knew him with a wonderful dry sense of humor. I first met him in 1994 in HQ AFMC/DO and stayed in touch over the years with mutual assignments in ASC. In my life I have met maybe five individuals who have stood intellectually apart from all the others. Mitch was one of them. I flew with him in the Test Wing on multiple occasions and remember his wit, his crystal insights, and finely honed flying skills. Your passing is premature, and our deepest condolences to your family...God Bless You.

August 1, 2011

Judy,
My sincere condolences for you and the family.

Mitch was a friend from long ago in 4950 Test Wing days, again in HQ AFMC, and then in SOF. He always had a wry sense of humor and self-depreciating style that loosened up any stressful situation. I also remember his stuffing himself into the Tweet and never complaining about the seat since he was flying!

My prayers go out to you and for him.

August 1, 2011

Judy and family,

Mitch left us all too early, but his memory will remain with me all my days. Sincerely,

Judy, Mark, Lisa, Chris

Mitch gave this world many gifts. I'm sure you will hear many reflections in the days and months to come, reminding you of gifts you knew about and uplifting you with ones you didn't.

Besides the gifts of two fabulous children in Mark and Lisa, he shared with me a second family in you, Judy and Chris. He also, in his own way, as he had done with many young men in the service, tried to show me what it is to be an adult, a man and a father. This gift may not have been truely appreciated by the young teenager I was then, but it has helped develop me into the person I am today.

I wish I had told him how much he meant.

Love, as always, to you all in this difficult time.

Mitch was a friend and wise counselor for over 15 years. Usually the smartest guy in the room, a quintessentail aviator with gifted hands...he'd been there done that in just about all aspects of his life...and he was never reticent to share his deepest thoughts on a host of life's most challenging questions. This world has lost a great, kind soul. I am forever grateful to have known him and called him my friend.

Mitch was one of the best friends I've ever had. He was hard-working, conscientious, generous with his time and resources, and did have that Saturnine sense of humor. We did volunteer work together for several years and kept up a daily e-mail correspondence to the end. I'll never forget him.

While I've only worked with Mitch for little more than a year, we recognized sufficient similarities in our background to have many spirited discussions: aircraft, flying, Edwards, politics, religion - just the stuff you're not supposed to talk about without being friends. What a guy - he will be missed

Mitch was an outstanding pilot and checked me out when I arrived in Dayton 30 years ago. I always looked up to his ability and demeanor. The ‘Big Guy’ was a very special pilot and person. So many memories…Judy and family, our thoughts are with you.

Our prayers are with Mitch and your family. Mitch & "Cuda" Carter flew the Wright B for my retirement ceremony in July 2008--we will never forget how wonderful that was. Our sincerest sympathies for the loss of our fellow wingman. Deb & Ernie Goenaga

Mitch has been a dear friend of mine for almost 25 years. His sense of humor and willingness to help others made him very special. His humorous e-mails make me laugh every time I read them. I will greatly miss him. My thoughts and prayers go to Judy and the family. May God bless you and give you strength in the days to come.

I just learned of Mitch's death-doing what he loved most. I have known Mitch for 33 years starting at WPAFB. We took our 5-flight evaluations for Test Pilot School together, and chased each other around in our T-38s. Mitch, you will be greatly missed, and to borrow a phrase from our brothers in the Navy, "Fair seas and following winds."
