News Death Notice
BYRD, Jr., Rev. Dr. Tommy H. age 68, of Dayton, departed this life on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the Department of Medical Affairs Medical Center. He was a native of Jackson, MS, raised in Detroit, MI, and a resident of Dayton for the last 29 years. He was the Pastor of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and the Moderator of the Northwestern Ohio Missionary Baptist Association. As a man of many talents, he used them to serve and proved to be an effective and faithful servant of God for most of his life, which was his greatest joy. He was a US Army veteran and held professions from a Teacher to a Detroit, MI Police Officer, but working for the Lord was his life's mission. He was a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and dutiful wife, Sandra; children, Tommy, III, (Atiya), Marlon, Charon (Sandra), LaChoya (Irving), grandchildren, a loving & devoted church family and many loyal friends. Visitation 4 to 7 pm Thursday, May 31, 2012. Tribute Ceremony will begin at 7 pm. Home going service will be held 11 am Friday, June 1, 2012. All services will be held at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 2067 N. Gettysburg Ave. with Pastor Joseph L. Coleman, officiating. Entombment Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery, 8135 N. Dixie Dr., Dayton, OH. Arrangements entrusted to the House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc., 2107 N. Gettysburg Ave.

I remember Pastor Byrd baptizing me as a young boy. He opened his heart, home and a church to me when I was in need. Whose son who had been like a brother to me; these memories I still hold with me to this day. Byrd Family, I love you, stay strong. Dear Sister Byrd, The Byrd Family and The Calvary Family, I thank God for the life and legacy of Pastor Byrd. I've never met anyone like him; he was kind, loving, strong, knowledgeable and a man after God's own heart. Absolutely none other could compare to his demonstration of God's love as he showed us the behavior of a real servant leader. May each of you be comforted through the fond memories of Pastor Byrd, my friend. I love Pastor Byrd and I am comforted by just knowing that God does in fact keep His promises. He promised to come back for His servant and that is exactly what He did when He took Pastor Byrd from labor to reward. The Homegoing ceromony for my Uncle Tommy was so touching, I felt like I was at a celebrity's funeral because that's who he was to me a Celebrity. I am truly sadden by this loss. Pastor Byrd you baptized me! You taught me things that I still take heed to today as an adult. My grandmother (Sis. Georgiajana Smith) followed your word! You officiated over her funeral and also over my Great Grandmother's funeral! I understand to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord... it just hurts too bad to let go. Once I lost my grandmother I haven't been able to step foot back in Calvary. I just couldn't. And I still don't think I can. But I love you Pastor Byrd, and I am praying over the entire Byrd family. I shall never forget the first time I met Pastor Byrd @ 9th Street Paducah, KY
He introduced our community to a new gospel group called Bobby Jones & New Life of Nashville, TN. Then Dr. Bobby Jones announced he was going on syndicated T.V. Dr. Byrd was an inspiration to so many, including his special affinity for young preachers and love for gospel preaching. He walked with power, authority, and humility. I appreciate the moments I shared gaining wisdom and just laughing with him. We all will miss him dearly. Family- be encouraged.

To Pastor Byrd's Family, May the memories that you share and knowing that God will continuously bless and hold you close sustain you through this time. Praying for you all. I thank God for allowing Pastor Byrd to give me food for thought that I have been able to use through the years.
