Sherman was an avid reader and loved history. He was a skilled woodworker and enjoyed being outside tending to his gardens. He was a collector of model tractors, trains and airplanes. He was gifted with so much talent and creativity. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ankeny and previously at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Urbandale.

Left to cherish Sherman's memory include his wife, Anna Gosch of Cypress, TX, his children James (Vicki) of Warrenton, VA, Cari (Jeremy) Otto of Magnolia, TX, Christopher (Hillary) of Waunakee, WI, his five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
