Edward Gebhart Obituary

Edward J. Gebhart, Jr.

AGE: 62 • Hockessin

Edward J. Gebhart, Jr., 62 of Hockessin, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 19, 2016 at the Heartland Hospice House.

Eddie was born in Wilmington, son of the late Edward, Sr. and Mary (Miller) Gebhart. He grew up in Hockessin and was a lifetime member of the Hockessin Fire Company, serving as a firefighter and member of the fire police since 1971. He was a huge fan of drag racing and when he was younger, owned a race car with his friend. He was mechanically inclined and very handy around the house. His biggest impact was made through his work as a mentor in local AA programs. He was a strong example to the countless friends he helped over the years. He will be dearly missed.

Eddie is survived by his three sisters, Patricia Galloway, Kathleen Gebhart, Karen Gebhart; his brother, John Gebhart; his niece and nephews, Heather, John, Byron (Mollie); and his great-niece and nephews, Kyle, Dillon, Colin and Katie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy in 2006.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 9:30am. Interment will be held in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Kennett Square.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Eddie's memory can be made to Heartland Hospice, 256 Chapman Road, Suite 102, Newark, DE 19702, or to the Hockessin Fire Company, 1225 Old Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707.

I won't be able to make it to the service today, but I wanted to make sure the family knew how special Ed was to me. I met Ed when I was really young working at the gas station, and I struck up a close friendship with him that I valued with all my heart. Ed taught me how to count money, made fun of me when I was mad in order to make me laugh, and was always there for me to talk to when I was stressed out or needed advice. When he got sick I talked to him about God.. He had a quiet faith that gave him the strength to get through the loss of his wife and keep himself sober for all those years. I will always remember his silly proclivities, like how he refused to smoke anything but soft pack Marlboro lights, and how he liked the yellow poweraid with tastey cakes., how he and I would argue about gardening and how certain chores were to be preformed. He truly was an amazing person and I will miss him terribly. He is at peace now with his wife and those who went before him. God bless his sisters, Karen and Kathleen, his brother John, and his nephew little Johnny. My prayers are with you all!
