Edwin Fleck Obituary

Edwin G. Fleck, Jr.

Mr. Edwin G. Fleck, Jr., age 76, of Newark, DE, passed away at his residence on Saturday, April 9, 2011, surrounded by his loved ones after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Ed worked for 46 years as a chemical engineer with FMC. During his career, he started up plants in Japan and Ireland. After retiring in 2000, he continued to work as a consultant. He was a long-time member of St. John's-Holy Angles R.C. Church, where he volunteered with the Knights of Columbus. He also volunteered with the Newark High School Band Boosters from 1977 until 1996, and was integral to the success of the annual sub sale fundraisers.

In his spare time, Ed enjoyed gardening, reading, and spending quality time with his family. He is known for the beautifully detailed dollhouses he made for special people in his life. He took great pleasure in making others happy. Ed also spent many summers raising Monarchs - from finding eggs and caterpillars on milkweed plants to releasing the adult butterflies. He shared this hobby with his grandchildren, friends, and others he met along the way. He leaves behind many fond memories, and will always be remembered as a gentle man, a family man, and a giving man.

Ed shared almost 53 years with his devoted wife, Patricia. He is also survived by eight children: Eileen Warwick (Steven), Lois Fleck, Susan Perna (Louis), Linda DeSalvo (Gregory), Alan Fleck (Carol), Laura Flack (Brian), Diane Massaglia (Robert), and Michelle Hawley (Michael). Additionally, he leaves behind 14 grandchildren: Gregory, Allison, Cassandra, Clarissa, Theodore, Sara, Calvin, Chloe, Ethan, Luke, Alex, Evan, Aidan, and Connor Edwin. Ed was proud of all his grandchildren, and his family is deeply saddened that he will miss the graduation of his eldest granddaughter, Midshipman Allison Warwick, from the United States Naval Academy in May, 2011. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Fleck. He was predeceased by his parents Edwin and Anna Fleck and by an infant son, John Edwin, in 1964.

Friends may call from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, April 13, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am, on Thursday, April 14, at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, E. Main and N. Chapel Streets, Newark. Interment will follow in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple Township, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517.

My deepest sympathy to the Fleck family. I remember Ed as neighbor and the father of my friend, Lois, as I was growing up in Newark. The Fleck house was always a great place to be. Ed was a great dad, and although I had moved away by then, I am sure he was a wonderful Grandfather too. He will be missed.

Dear Pat & Family,

I knew Ed through the Knights of Columbus and from seeing him and your family at St. John's church. Ed seemed to do tremendous things in small ways. We, as his fellow knights, always appreciated the help he gave our council and charitable works. God bless you and your family in this difficult time.

Dear Pat and Family,
I was so sorry to learn of Ed's passing; each of you has my heart felt sympathies and condolences. May each of you receive and experience that peace which passes all understanding.
As an invidual and fellow co-worker of Ed's, there is much to to remember and give thanks for, including his gentle, kind and giving nature - always there to share his time, knowledge and insights; an inspiration, example and mentor to many; an unassuming man who was an engineer's engineer; a husband, father, and grandfather who was so very proud of and loved is family dearly, a man who could have worked anywhere but chose to stay with one company and help/encourage others to think, improve, and extend themselves.
What a great pleasure and good fortune it's been for me to have known and crossed paths with Ed, to have been on the receiving end his help and guidance, and to have shared laughter, chuckles, and head shakes over the years.
Sincerely,
Dave & Diana Werner

Ed made coming to work something to look forward to every day. Endless discussions both practical and theorhetical taught me what collage could not. The joy of learning. With periodicals, newspapers, journals lining his office wall from floor to ceiling I had trouble understanding the value of the Internet. Ed was always less than a minute away from locating some obscure paper such as Determination of Cellulose Crystallinity with IR Spectroscopy by Nelson at the Department of Agriculture,1963. Believe it or not I will miss that paper and I will miss you Ed.
