Hugh McCann Obituary

Deacon Hugh J. McCann, Sr. Age 89 of Wilmington, DE formerly of Newark, died peacefully at home on Thursday, January 20, 2005. Hugh was the business manager at St. John's-Holy Angel's parish for 20 years until retiring in 1992. He was ordained a deacon in the Dioceses of Wilmington in 1980. Hugh served several parishes before retiring in 2003. He was known for his inspiring homilies and his sense of humor. He served in the Army during WWII. Hugh enjoyed reading, singing and Irish music. Hugh was preceded in death by his son, Laurence McCann in 1979; his daughter, Regina Kotowski in 2003, his parents, Hugh and Jennie McCann; sisters, Frances McCuteheon, Alice Sherer and Betty Connell; and a brother, William McCann. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary K. McCann; children, Kathleen Chudnofsky and her husband, Harold, of Linwood, PA, Prof. Hugh McCann and his wife, Prof. Janet, of College Station, TX, Terence McCann of Northeast, MD, Patrick McCann and his wife, Kathy, of Charles City, IA, Dr. Kevin McCann and his wife, Dr. Judith McCann, of Northeast, MD, Daniel McCann and his wife, Carol, of Los Angeles, CA and Marie Graney and her husband, Michael, of Wilmington; sisters, Mary Shaw and Teresa Stemock, both of PA; brother, Joseph McCann of FL; 30 grandchildren; and 30 great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at Holy Angels Church, Possum Park Rd., in Newark, where visitation will be from 9:30-10:45 am. Visitation will also be at the church on Tuesday evening, January 25th, from 5-7:30 pm. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery, Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington. The family suggests contributions in Hugh's memory to the building fund at St. John's Holy Angels Church, 82 Possum Park Rd., Newark, DE 19711 NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME 302-998-8013
