Johnny was truly a wonderfully genuine person whom I feel blessed to have as a teammate. Tremendous individual and gifted athlete who was a quiet leader, and was always showing the way by example!
Certainly he is in a better place, but was taken too early in life! Thanks for all you did for all of us who were teammates! God Bless!

I just found out about the passing of Mr. Vann. I taught music at Olney high school in Philadelphia under Mr. Vann. He was a great person to work for, I'll never forget when we had to fight a fire together on the 4th floor. Johnny used the extinguisher until the fire department got there,we both were risking our lives. I Send my condolences to his family.

I had the privilege of recruiting Johnny to the University of South Dakota as a student and Football player. He was joined on our team by his brothers, Booker and Tommy.
John was an outstanding credit to the USD program. He was a very good student and an outstanding Player. He made a major contribution as a Strong Safety to the 3 North Central Conference Championships. He was named to the All Conferece team, an award he achieved by hard work and dedication. We are very proud of the contributions he made.
My prayers are with the Vann Family. Joe Salem, Head Football Coach, USD

I loved him too! He was my best friend. My deepest, heartfelt sympathy to all of you. John took care of my family, like it was his own. He never met a stranger.

October 11, 2011

My condolences to the Vann family. Johnny and Booker were teammates of mine at USD. He was a great player and leader.

October 10, 2011

I am so very sorry to hear of Johnny's death. My sincerest condolences to all of Johnny's family, but especially to his brother Booker, who was my teammate at USD, along with Johnny. Obviously, this news of Johnny's passing was shocking to so many of his teammates at USD. Johnny and Booker have often been talked about, and so many have wondered where they were and what they have been doing over the past many years. Certainly this is not the way that I wanted to find out about Johnny, and I am truly saddened to hear of his passing. Johnny was a true friend and I enjoyed many FUN times together with both Johnny and Booker. I truly hope that Booker can join all of his former teammates in the near future so we can share some valuable time together and have the opporutnity to talk about his wonderful brother and his outstanding contriubutions, not only to USD but to everyone and everytthing that he came into contact with over his 59 years here on earth. God Bless Johnny, and I say that on behalf of all of his USD teammates, he left us before his time. Barry Blue (Former Teammate @ USD 1970-73)

He was an excellent principal and educator and I am thankful that my three children attended Gauger Cobbs School while he was principal there. We only have a short period of time to make our impact on this world. Mr. Vann made a tremendous positive contribution to the lives of many young children when he served in Delaware.
