Verna Marrs Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home - Middletown on Feb. 26, 2026.
Verna (Gertrude) Godwin Marrs, age 91, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026.

She was born on September 26, 1934, in Newark, DE. She graduated from Newark High School in 1952, where she was a good student and enjoyed being a majorette in the marching band.

In 1954, she married William A. Marrs, Jr., who she was married to for 46 years until his passing in 2000.

Bill and Verna set up housekeeping in Newark, and had 2 children, Emily and Billy. They stayed in Newark while the kids were growing up and spent most of their summers at their beach home in Millsboro, DE. Many of the happiest memories of her life were made at the beach, with her children and later her grandchildren.

They later moved to Greenwood Lake, NY for Bill's job, which she loved for 10 years. Upon retirement, they moved back to the beach area in Delaware, to Pot Nets Seaside. She helped establish and was on the board of the Homeowners Association for Seaside for 20 years. Over that time, she served as president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer at various times.

Verna was an active member at New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Lewes, DE. She has many friends from church and the community, including "The Girls", who met regularly for lunch and good times.

In 2021 Verna moved up north to live with her son, Bill and his wife, Julie, due to health issues. She lived with them for 4 years and then moved to the memory care center at Harmony of Glasgow in 2025. She enjoyed her time there and was very well cared for until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William A Marrs, Jr. and her daughter, Emily Lee.

Verna is survived by her son, William (Julie), brother, Robert Godwin of Stanardsville, VA, grandchildren, Christopher Thorp (Helena), William A. Marrs, IV, and Stephanie Nicastro (Connor), as well as 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers donations to the American Lung Association would be greatly appreciated. https://www.lung.org/
