Danny Herman Purnell

Atlanta, GA-Danny Herman Purnell, 39 formerly of Mardela Springs, MD, died Saturday, September 13, 2014 in Atlanta, GA.

Born in Salisbury, MD, he is the son of Norwood and Barbara (Lindsey) Purnell of Mardela, MD.

He was a 1993 graduate of Mardela High School. Upon graduation he matriculated at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD where he participated in the R.O.T.C. Program, graduating with a B. A. degree in communications. He has served in the U.S. Army for more than seventeen years; serving in the Army National Guard for eleven years, with seven years of Active Duty, where he did two tours in combat zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, receiving the Bronze Star. He was an Electromagnetic Spectrum Manager with the U.S. Army.

He was an active member of the Lamda Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He was also a member of Wesley Temple United Methodist Church in Salisbury.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Kristie Purnell of Atlanta; four children: Amir Purnell of Marianna, FL, Carter Purnell, Colin and Ann Marie Smith, all of Atlanta, GA; one brother: Kurt (Robin) Purnell of Upper Marlboro, MD; four aunts, three uncles and one niece: Ahnijah Smith.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 27, 2014 at First Baptist Church, 528 Booth Street, Salisbury. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. A viewing will be held Friday, September 26, 2014 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Wesley Temple U.M. Church, and on Saturday at First Baptist Church, one hour prior to service. Fraternal rites will be held Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Lambda Phi Chapter Scholarship fund and Renaissance Program that mentors youth. Checks can be made payable to the Lambda Phi Chapter in memory of Danny H. Purnell.

Services are entrusted to Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury, MD.
