John McLean Obituary

Dr. John R. McLean, M.D.

Dr. John (Jack) R. McLean, M.D., 68, passed away on May 20th, 2020 from complications of COVID-19 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chicago, IL where he had moved just one year prior. He was born on January 19th, 1952 in Baltimore, MD to the late Dr. G. Robert and Jane McLean and is survived by his daughter Diana McLean Grinnell, son-in-law Matthew R. Grinnell, and beloved grandson, Gavin McLean Grinnell.

Dr. McLean graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1970 and later from Loyola University Maryland in 1974, followed by University of Maryland Medical School in 1978. He then joined the United States Air Force, practicing Internal Medicine and Cardiology for the next 11 years, stationed in Langley, Virginia, San Antonio, Texas, and Biloxi, Mississippi. In 1989, he traveled back to his home state of Maryland to be near family, his love of seafood and the ocean. It was on the Eastern Shore that he opened his Interventional Cardiology private practice, proudly dedicating his life for over 20 years to the care of his patients, many of whom became lifelong friends.

In addition to the pride he took in his career, Jack also had a number of passions, most surrounding nature and pastimes spent outside with his daughter, Diana. He loved playing golf and was a long-time member of the Green Hill Country Club. Travels to lands near and far also brought some of his happiest times with Diana, including deep sea fishing, teaching her to become the ultimate fisherwoman. Together, they were always in search of all four types of Marlin, but sadly, they were never able to catch that elusive Striped.

With a love for plants, Jack cultivated a variety of bonsai trees and was once comically reprimanded for turning a dank, windowless military office into his own "greenhouse" by decorating with plants that thrived without sunlight. Happily, Jack was also deemed the unofficial Mayor of 122nd Street of Ocean City, Maryland, where he had installed a bird statue which still stands proudly today.

Jack is also survived by his brother George McLean II (Agnes) of San Antonio, Texas, brother Bruce D. McLean (Rosemary) of Baltimore, Maryland, cousin Patricia Gallagher Hope (Brian) of Arnold, Maryland, and nephews Thomas G. McLean (Michelle) and John N. McLean, of San Antonio and Baltimore, respectively.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
