Robert Lownes Wilson Jr.

MARDELA SPRINGS — Robert "Bob" Lownes Wilson Jr., 85, of Mardela Springs died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at his home with his wife and son by his side. Born in Mardela Springs, he was the son of the late Robert Lownes Wilson Sr. and Marion E. Messick Wilson.

He retired in 1988 as a highway engineer with the state of Maryland for 38 years.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marge E. Wagner Wilson; a son, Michael Jay Wilson Sr.; grandson, Michael Jay Wilson Jr. of Delmar; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Wilson III; sisters, Blanche Parker, Helen Hudson and Margaret Wilson; and a brother, Thomas Wilson.

He graduated from Mardela High School in 1945. He then resumed his education at the University of Maryland with an Athletic, ROTC Scholarship. While in Maryland he received several Letters of Excellence in baseball and soccer. He was a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, playing with the Mardela Blues, Willards Wildcats in the Central Shore League. He also played in the fast pitch Softball Industrial Shore League. Also active in the Boy Scouts Movements and past president of Mardela High School PTA and vice president of the Town Commissioners. He was Past Master of Wicomico Lodge 91, Boumi Temple, Shriners of Baltimore and Scottish Rite of Salisbury. The Masons will be serving as pallbearers.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. His nephew, the Rev. Steve Wagner, will officiate. Interment will follow in Mardela Memorial Cemetery in Mardela Springs.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Bob to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802 or Mardela Fire Department, P.O. Box 299, Mardela Springs, Md. 21837.

Uncle Bob always had a gentle touch in everything he did, he always had time to talk to you and even as a little boy I remember that he would answer all of the silly questions that a kid would ask and never shrugged me off. He was a great husband and father to his family. Truly a good man:)
