William Phillips Obituary

William Hollis Phillips

Carolina Shores, NC-William Hollis Phillips, 77, of Carolina Shores, NC, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2016 at the SECU Hospice House in Bolivia, NC. Bill was born on May 14, 1939 in Salisbury, MD and was preceded in death by his parents, William Boone Phillips and Charlotte Lowe Phillips, and his daughter, Michelle Phillips Vail. Bill is survived by his wife of 23 years, Dawn Shiley Phillips; his daughter Yvette Culver (Robert); grandchildren Joseph Wilhelmi, Michelle Culver and Jarron Dunnick; brothers-in-law Kevin Shiley, Jeffrey Shiley (Melanie), and Scott Shiley (Malissa); five nephews; and his Shelties Chloe, Brianna, Jett and Maine Coon Cat Bailey. Bill served his country in the U.S. Air Force, earned his undergraduate degree from Salisbury University, and two masters degrees from Binghamton University and Salisbury University. After several years of teaching in public education and a long career in the communications industry, he served as the Chair of the Communications Department of UNC Pembroke and after retirement, he continued to teach at UNC Wilmington where he led several educational trips abroad with students. He was a member and lay speaker at Ocean View United Methodist Church and also attended Generations Church. Bill loved the beach, traveling with family and friends, and riding his motorcycle. He was the happiest reading in his library from his extensive collection of books and listening to music from the fifties. He took great pride in raising and showing his beloved Shetland Sheepdogs. He was a generous, charming man with a zest for life and a keen sense of adventure. He was always up for a good time, new experiences and loved being with people. He was a born entertainer, a magnet for fun and a friend for life. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28401, or to Sheltie Rescue Alternative, Inc., c/o Eva Saks, 7443 Whitaker Avenue, Van Nuys, CA, 91406. Please designate the contributions for either organization in the memory of William H. Phillips. To Dawn and Bill's family,
For as much as I can, I share your grief with the loss of husband, father, and grandfather, and brother in law. He lived a good life; he will be missed. I will remember Bill as a dear friend. My life was enriched by having crossed paths with his. His smile and laughter will remain with us.
May the love of God, family, and friends comfort you through these difficult days. Shalom. With love, BJ

Dawn
There just are not enough words to express my sympathy for your loss. In the short time I knew Bill, he taught me so much. He will be missed dearly by you, other family members and the so many friends he made. May God bring you peace. One day, we will all play with our Shelties together. Love you

Sorry for your loss. Bill was a friend in Salisbury circa 1950 - 57. I lost track when he joined the Air Force and I'm not surprised he accomplished so much in life.
