Alfred Scheible Obituary

Scheible, Alfred G.
Rochester: Alfred Scheible, born in Rochester on Dec. 6, 1912, grew up on a large farm on Mt. Hope Avenue, then West Brighton. He spent his entire life in Rochester and passed away on March 9, 2009, in the same neighborhood he knew so well in his youth.
Mr. Scheible passed peacefully at the Episcopal Church Home, under Hospice of Rochester Lifetime Care. A longtime resident of Brighton and Pittsford, he moved in August to Brentland Woods in Henrietta, part of Episcopal Senior Life. His time there was truly enriched by the caring staff and new friends. He was 96. Among his papers, his family found notes made in 1996 from an obituary for P.L. Travers, creator of Mary Poppins. Her obit read, "the west wind finally took her at 96;" Mr. Scheible jotted beside it, "Nice epitaph."
A gentleman, gracious and dignified, he will be sorely missed by his family. He worked hard to adjust to the challenges of age, saying "I prefer to remember the good times," and also maintained an ability to "see what tomorrow brings." He kept his mischievous sense of humor and wry appreciation for the lighter side of life.
Alfred was a graduate of Monroe High School. In 1935, he graduated from the U of R, after cutting grass at Mt. Hope Cemetery and playing tenor sax in the University Ragpickers, a dance band to pay for school. He met his wife of 50 years, Jean Graves Scheible, Class of 1938, at a dance at Conesus Lake. They were married in 1940. She died in 1990 and his three sisters, Dorothea McConnell, Elizabeth Killip and Eleanor Ries, also predeceased him. He is survived by his son, Stephen, of East Sandwich, MA, and his daughter, Susan, of Watertown, MA, and many nieces and nephews.
A former advertising executive with Wolff Associates, he loved to read and enjoyed word puzzles and jumbles. He followed newspaper accounts of life in the city with interest. In his 50s, he took up running and rose at 4 a.m. each day to join the Dawn Patrol at the Downtown YMCA. He was a member of Oak Hill CC and president of the Rochester Twilight Golf League.
Private family services and a celebration of his life will be held. Online Condolences welcomed at:

We will miss this dear gentleman. We exchanged cheerful greetings,
and encouraging words, from a distance. We knew eachother through his very devoted and accomplished daughter Sue. Al was a thoughtful, kind person.
