Max Sauer Obituary

Sauer, Max J.

Middlesex, NY: December 20, 2012, at age 86. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Erika; son, Maximilian (Karen) Sauer; daughters, Heidi (Christian) Gruger, Germany and Ingrid (David) Hoffman of Middlesex; son-in-law, Joseph Nacca; grandchildren, Thea and Leilani Sauer, Camille (Andrew) Siegel-Sauer, Colin and Elena Gruger, Joseph (Michelle) Nacca Jr., Nicholas (Katherine) Nacca, Gabriel Nacca; great-grandchildren, Giada and Nadia Nacca; brothers, Herbert (Liesl) Sauer of Germany and Franz (Martha) Sauer of Irondequoit; many nieces and nephews in the Rochester area and Germany. Predeceased by his daughter, Monika Nacca in 2007 and his brother, Hans Sauer in 1999.

Max was a skilled craftsman in iron, having learned his trade (Schlosser) in his home town of Bad Wiesee, state of Bavaria, Germany. He applied this as proprietor of John Braun Ornamantal Iron Works in Rochester until his retirement. Max was very active outdoors over the years. He enjoyed sailing (and sometimes racing) his Flying Dutchman on Canandaigua Lake. He was a member of Hunt Hollow Ski Club since 1967, where he participated in the Lovejoy Series races, and won many Best in Class honors. Just this year, he was acknowledged as an Honorary 70-year member of the Bad Wiesee Ski Club (Germany). He still skied last season, when he joked that Racing was no longer a quest for the best time, but now getting down the course was a "matter of survival".

Friends may call on Wednesday, December 26, from 4-7 PM at the Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., 47 N. Main St., Canandaigua, where a Funeral Service will be held Thursday at 10 AM. Interment, in Mendon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Association, 435 E. Henrietta Rd., Rochester, NY 14620 or the Ontario-Yates Hospice, 756 Pre-Emption Rd., Geneva, NY 14456. Condolences may be offered at www.johnsonkennedy.com
