Benny Whitlock Obituary

Benny Tom Whitlock

Benny Tom Whitlock, age 79 of Denton, Texas, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 14th, 2021.

The son of Bates and Helen Whitlock, Benny was born October 9th, 1942, in Denton, Texas. Benny was the third of four children and lived in Denton for his entire life. A standout boxer in his youth, Benny won the 1962 Sherman Golden Gloves tournament as a welterweight. Benny also represented Denton in the Texas State Golden Gloves Tournament in 1962 and 1968.

Following his graduation from Denton High School, Benny joined his father in his commercial and residential painting business. He and Gwen married in 1964 and raised their three daughters locally. Benny was known for his “do it yourself attitude and skills, which he passed on to his children. He built additions to his home, including an outdoor pavilion, which was the site for many family gatherings. It was rare to find a moment that Benny was not smiling, especially when spending time with his grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as Papa Benny. Benny went out of his way to help those he knew, and didnt know, and never met a stranger in his life.

Benny is survived by his wife, Gwen, his children, Brad and wife, Patty Fleming, Suzy Whitlock, Kelly and husband, Wayne Willey, and Angie and husband, Rob Friedman. Benny had nine grandchildren, Emily Cook and Sam Fleming, Jacques, Caroline and Henri Friedman, Remy and Ben Willey, and Elec and Livvy Bush. Benny is also survived by his brother, James Whitlock, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Benny is preceded in death by his parents, Bates and Helen Whitlock, and his two sisters, Jo Helen and Mary Ann Whitlock.

I was just a child the first time I met Benny. I remember him playing with me like I was his own child, and he barely knew me. Such a kind, loving man. ❤
