Chuck Weiss Obituary

Weiss, Chuck E

Chuck E Weiss, musician, actor, music historian, and sometimes comedian, died Tuesday, July 20th, in Los Angeles, CA. Chuck E was the leader of legendary underground band 'Chuck E Weiss and the God Damn Liars', he was part owner of the infamous Viper Room, along with his friend Johnny Depp, where he performed legendary music shows weekly, taught a class on music history at University of Colorado (one of the first of its kind), was the "Chuck E" in Rickie Lee Jones' classic hit "Chuck E's In Love", had two of his albums produced by buddy Tom Waits, and after years of drug abuse, was an important leader in turning people around from the problems of drug and alcohol excess. His speeches at AA meetings in Los Angeles, were legendary. Chuck E was a unique character that always made us laugh, unbeknownst to many, he had funny parts in several tv sitcoms. Even though he may have never been given the recognition he deserved in the music community, for many, his persona and talent will live forever.
Chuck E is survived by his brother, Byron "Whizzy" Weiss and his two nephews, Andy and Brett Weiss; Graveside service, Monday, 1:45pm, Emanuel Cemetery; a livestream will also be available on Feldman Mortuary's YouTube Channel.

I met Chuck when he was running the Record Center on the Hill in Boulder a long, long time ago. Ear to ear smile, squinting eyes, and laughter. One of the coolest people to ever grace my life.
Happy trails amigo.

I am so sorry to hear about your passing. I just found out. You are such a happy memory of my past when you lived in Denver. We had such good times when we hung out at Chuck Morris´ famous Ebbets Field. We would spend hours talking and laughing our heads off at the next door diner after the shows. When Tom Waits was in town (which was quite often) he would join us and you two would tap out different beats on the table and sing or recite poems. We would sit there for hours drinking coffee and being entertained. It is such a fond memory in my life and it was never the same after you left for L.A. You´ll always live in my heart Chuck E Weiss.

Legend. National Treasure. Mensch. & Extremely Cool.
So many memories. Such a good friend.

So many treasured gifts left on my front doorstep in the middle of the night, but the Talking Kinky Friedman Doll took the cake. To this day, I laugh or smile each time I look at it.

I was woken by sounds at my front door at 2:30am. I went to the door and saw Chuck walking away. I called to him. He waved over his shoulder `I gotta go.´ When I walked back to my door I saw that he has left the Kinky Friedman doll propped up against my door.

I know Chuck is synonymous with The Central, but the many nights at the now defunct Hot House were my altimeter favorites.

Chuck will always be missed.
