Coach Smaldone was a great coach and an eminently decent man. We had a lot of great coaches at Lincoln High, but coach Smaldone was unique in his style. It was one of seriousness coupled with patience and was in strong contrast to most of the others. I never saw or heard him belittle or yell at an athlete ever. He didn´t have to do any of that to impress you with his knowledge or to get his athletes to give all they could. He was a great example to the young men he coached as a genuine gentleman. May he rest in peace and his memory be a blessing to all that have known him.

I was crushed to hear of Genes passing. I was lucky enough to work for and with Gene for 20 years at Summer Fun Day Camp. He was a warm and wonderful man. He was a family man who loved his 3 daughters and his grandchildren. Gene was a mentor, a teacher and most importantly he spent the largest part of life working and caring for the youth of Denver.
Gene, you will truly be missed but be assured that you will still be present in the lives of all those whose life's were touched and enriched by you.

Linda and family,
Heartbroken over the news. Gene was always a kind and wonderful man. I believe my brothers would agree we always enjoyed time with him - we'd known him our entire lives. It's such sad news but you may find peace knowing he was love and respected by many because of the nature of who he was.
Kindly,
Marilyn Capra

Mr. Smaldone was a favorite teacher and coach. Once, when I kidded him about always wearing those black coach's shoes and asked if he also wore them to church, he replied, "Yes, but I put black laces in!" RIP Coach Smaldone.
