Svozil, Joseph "Jolly Joe" 91, went back to God October 10. Known as The Gypsy in Central City, the Philly Kid by Frank Sinatra and nicknamed Jolly Joe by Benny Goodman. Joe played amazing piano to the very end. Played for Billie Holiday in New Orleans and Glen Miller in '44. Jolly Joe retired in Denver, playing piano and providing humor at the Brown Palace, Senate Lounge, Shirley Savoy and others. Joe helped Tony Bennett learn to sing a song. He is survived by his sister Helen White, his adopted "brother" Steve Schweitzberger and friends both old and new, who were blessed to know him. Visitation 8:15 a.m., Funeral Mass 9 a.m. Monday, October 19 at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

I had the marvelous opportunity to meet Joe and sing some "torch songs" to his jazz piano. What a warm, friendly man he was, and what talent he shared for his entire life. His quick wit and quicker jazz riffs will never be forgotten.
