Dr. Bergin consulted with me on a military psychotherapy outcomes study while I was in the Air Force 1976-1978. I had thoroughly studied his work in developing our experimental protocol and couldn't believe that the AF funded bringing him to Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center to consult with us before beginning the study. He reviewed everything and said we did a good job. I was so gratified because I was just a year past my own internship. It was a major study for us and I have never forgotten his kindness and support. I was in awe of him. That was about 1977, I believe, and I am now 82 years old and still working. God bless Dr. Allen and the world is very much a better place for how he developed empirical bases and rigor for studying psychotherapy outcomes, putting us on a trajectory that extends even into today's studies. His work was blessed and it was holy in every since of the word.

Having had the privilege of working with Dr. Bergin in committees and the honor of sharing the podium with him a time or two, I have not seen him for many years and am surprised and saddened that I now see him in the obituaries. In addition to his devotion as husband to Marian and father to 9 children, and to his Church in numerous high callings, Allen was humble and kind man, a brilliant thinker, and in the top eschelon of psychology researchers. He was known internationally for his expertise in finding answers to why psychotherapy is effective, or in some cases and with some therapists isn´t, and integrating religion and psychotherapy. For his prolific research, multiple publications, and fascinating professorial teaching he received a long list of prestigious awards and the gratitude of so many, especially students who were struggling to square their religious faith with the evolving science of human behavior. He never tooted his horn, but it was heard firmly and clearly among scholars in his field and students in his classes.
Farewell to a truly great man, though his stellar contributions will endure, and deep sympathy to his family.
