Lloyd Pendleton Obituary

Lloyd Sharp Pendleton
1940 ~ 2019
Fairview, Utah -Lloyd Sharp Pendleton, 78, who started as a cowboy in the dusty Utah desert, and later was known as the tireless "Energizer Bunny" champion of the downtrodden, died at home March 3, 2019 after a short but intense battle with cancer. Lloyd's life reflected his beliefs; one person can make a difference, serving others is a privilege, and all people are his brothers and sisters.
After serving in the LDS Eastern States Mission, Lloyd decided to pursue an education at BYU graduating with a BA and MBA. His love for numbers took him into finance at the Ford Motor Company and his love of people then took him to work in the LDS church's welfare system where he helped implement and expand Humanitarian Services and was also a loaned executive to assist various non-profit organizations around Utah.
In Lloyd's encore career he became the Director of Utah's Homeless Task Force. He was known as an ardent supporter for the housing first model for the chronically homeless and spoke around the nation encouraging others to adopt this revolutionary model. Lloyd loved mentoring others and encouraged everyone to become their best selves. He devoted his life to the Church, loved teaching gospel doctrine, learning about Christ and tried to follow His example. We are sure wherever Lloyd is now, he has strapped on his running shoes and is out surveying the new landscape.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Beth, and two daughters: Sherri Pendleton and Camille Pendleton (Don Wright) and four grandchildren, Brother Dick Pendleton and Sister Bonnie (Terry) Dorton. His parents W. Oral and Isabelle S. Pendleton, and brother Dean Pendleton preceded him in death.
His memorial service is Saturday, March 30th at 11am in the 9th Ward Chapel, 585 East Center Street, Bountiful, UT. Lloyd is interred in Fairview's cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate your time or funds to local non-profits or to The Road Home, Utah Food Bank, or the Utah Non-Profit Housing Corporation in Lloyd's name.

Although it's several years since Lloyd left earthly life, I'm just now seeing this and can't simply read it and leave without saying, like so many others, what a deep impression Lloyd left on me. He was in the Capitol Hill ward for a year when he worked a detail in HHS and we loved him. In a particularly moving and memorable testimony, ge once spoke of his artist daughter and how her art was how she fulfilled the commandment to "be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth." Lloyd was and always will be a blessing. To his family: I hope your memories now are much more happiness and comfort than grief.

An amazing individual. I never met him, but based on his work with the homeless -- his empathy for the most destitute of us -- I think it is fair to conclude he was a man of honor. May he rest in peace, and may his legacy inspire the rest of us to treat all people work dignity, respect, and grace.

I "inherited" Lloyd through his work association with my husband, Randy Hopkins. One of the best gifts I've ever received. We just learned of his passing on Monday when Facebook alerted Randy about his birthday. Heartbroken for you and your family, but grateful for his release from pain. Now is he free again to shed his light on everyone around him. Because of our deep and special connection, I penned this tribute which appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune, Aug. 23, 2019. "Lloyd Pendleton Helped Us Save Ourselves by Helping Others."

Lloyd was a major national leader in the work of ending homelessness. His work and his powerful moral voice will inspire those of us working in this national movement for decades to come. I will cherish the memory of a warm, loving human being who was always encouraging and gave so much to so many.

We are sad to hear Lloyd has passed through the veil. He and you, MaryBeth were the strengh we needed after we joined the Church. Over the years we followed your example and shared lessons you taught us. As we grew and became leaders in our various wards and branches we shared your wisdom and example. Thank you both for your dedication and friendship.

I was not lucky to know him personally, but he influenced my work tremendously. I started working directly with the homeless population in 2015 and did extensive research to teach myself the Housing First Approach. His study and publications (and I recently viewed him on YouTube) was inspiring. I used him as an example in training others for the last few years. I am sorry to hear that such a leader and mentor has passed. My condolences to the family. Know he will be remembered.

I was shocked and truly saddened to hear of Lloyd's passing. He and I spent many a day working on various humanitarian efforts, including early work with the homeless and poor in Utah. I am deepely saddened that I did not hear of this loss until just this morning.

Lloyd was a terrific soul -- bright, energetic, and undeterred when it came to solving problems. He helped many local non-profits with efficient management and compassionate service.

I will personally miss the influence of this good man. Mary Beth was an ardent supporter for many years. May the Lord bless you and your family, Mary Beth.

Sincerely,

Ike Ferguson

I'm so sorry to learn of Lloyd's passing. It was my privilege to work with Lloyd over the years with The Road Home and Shelter the Homeless, Inc. He was a tireless advocate and problem solver for "the least" of our Heavenly Father's children, and in serving them, he was truly serving the Lord. He was intent on seeing that as many individuals and families as possible could have their own home or apartment. I loved Lloyd Pendleton, and his great work on behalf of the homeless will long be an inspiration to many of us.

Lloyd was a remarkable gospel doctrine teacher. The moment I met him I liked him immediately. It was clear he had a superior intellect, he was interesting, and most of all, I could immediately sense how genuine he was. Even though I haven't seen or talked to him in over 25 years, I remember him well. Heartfelt condolences to his family.
