Robert Warnock Obituary

Robert Godbe Warnock
"Dr. Bob"
We have lost one of the greatest members of the greatest generation. Dr. Robert Godbe Warnock passed away September 7, 2015 at 90 years of age. To capture the depth and breadth of Bob's life in mere words is a daunting task. For example, you don't know too many people who have the intestinal parasite of a ground squirrel named after them. But Bob did.
Bob was born to Robert Oliver Warnock and Margaret Godbe on March 28, 1925 in Salt Lake City. Growing up during the Great Depression, Bob was educated in the Salt Lake school system and was a graduate of East High. At the outbreak of World War II Bob was drafted into the United States Army, and the chair of the draft board who signed his draft card was his mother. During the war Bob served as a medic in the Pacific Theater in the Bismarck Archipelago, and New Guinea, participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, was already on the beach and watched Douglas MacArthur's "return" to the Philipines, and was in the Occupation Army of Japan. For Bob's service he was awarded, among other citations, two Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart.
Upon his return to Utah, Bob married the love of his life, Joan Lingenfelter. During the years that ensued, the Warnock home was the focal point for their family, friends, and extended family, known for hospitality, generosity, laughter and love. In addition to housing their own children, Bob and Joan often sheltered, fed and cared for many others, family or not, who needed a place to stay.
A true Utah Man, Bob received his bachelor's (1949), master's (1951), and doctorate (1962) from the University of Utah. After taking his PhD, Bob embarked on a 30-year career as a biology teacher at Westminster College. At Westminster Dr. Bob was one of the toughest, best and most beloved teachers that Westminster ever had. The influence Bob had on generations of students both in the classroom and outside the classroom is immeasurable. Ecology classes taught on cross-country skis, biology trips to Catalina Island, Jamaica, Africa, and many other places opened the eyes and hearts of his students to the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Intramural basketball leagues, and Friday "seminars" at the Sugar Bowl invited students and colleagues into his heart. Upon retirement in 1990, Dr. Warnock was named Professor Emeritus by Westminster College.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan, and is survived by their three children, Michael (Linda) Warnock, Linda (Bruce) Koch, Laney (Chris) Long, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, and a legacy of generosity, service, laughter and love that can't be quantified.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the Alumni House on the campus of Westminster College, 1840 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Dr. Barry Quinn/Dr. Robert Warnock Science Scholarship at Westminster College. In addition, the family would like to thank the staff of the Highland Care Center for the love and kindness given to Bob; one of the greatest members of the greatest generation.

Dear Warnock Family, Sending my condolences for the loss of your dear Robert. I somehow missed his obituary in the newspaper and was unaware of his passing until last night when I stopped in at Highland Care Center to visit with him. Lew and Bob can now resume their morning coffee gathering. God bless all.

Dr. Warnock was a great help to me since I majored in Biology. He was my advisor and always answered any questions I had. I came from The Gambia, West Africa, and as a foreign student, I was always seeking guidance. May his soul rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with all the Warnock family.

Dr. Warnock was a mentor, supporter and guide to me as biology major 1968. He was always there for me, as foreign student. Helped me with homework whenever I needed it. GREAT MAN.
My condolences to Mike and Linda. My prayers are with you and your families.

My husband and I were fortunate to have traveled to Africa with Bob and Joan. We greatly enjoyed their company, and learned so much from Bob. Among much I learned about Africa and its animals, Bob shared his appreciation for birds - this interest has stayed with me, much to my pleasure.
I send my sympathy to Bob's family on the loss of this special man.

Bob was always very kind, to new and old faculty alike. I remember running into him up Millcreek Canyon cross-country skiing. He was an inspiration to us all; always had a kind word for everyone. I hope that when I am 70+, that I am skiing. My sincere condolences.

What a great man with a great wit, we have lost. He always made me smile when I visited him. I'll miss our Monk and pizza nights. Linda and Laney, you were there for him which I know he really appreciated. I'm glad he was able to have his 90th birthday bash. I hope all the love and memories you have for your dad will help you heal. You and your families are in my prayers. Love, Karen

Bob was legendary when I started teaching at Westminster in 1977. He was kind and helpful to the new professors. In those years we worked hard and and loved it. Bob, Barry Quinn, Jay Lees, Tom Steinke, Pat Coleman, Don Doxey,Janet Booth, Steve Baar-- all were inspirational and what a partying crew! I owe my sense of purpose and community to them.I send my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Bob was a mentor to me as a new biology major at Westminster starting in 1977. His humor, his humility and his humanity were genuine parts of who he was. I am certain that in part, Bob is the reason for my future successes. He cared deeply for his students many of whom became lifelong friends. He is deeply missed but not forgotten. My thoughts and condolences for his family.

Bob was a good friend. His sense of humor ("I thought I was taller") will be missed. He was man of great talent and great insight. The night he explained the death of his best friend in WWII underscored the great pain and hurt left in him by the war. He defended intelligent discourse with his every breath and we sit one less at the table without him. He raised a wonderful family dedicated to education and we are all honored to have known him. Yes, he was in the Greatest Generation and he was one of the many who earned that title with sacrifice and service. Our best to his family and we will continue to remember him fondly.

To Bob's family, I'm a Biology professor who started shortly after Bob retired at Westminster. He used to attend everything! He was such a mentor to me as I started. He is an inspiration to all of us still. Hugs to all.
