Roger Jensen Obituary

Roger Stanley Sherman Jensen

1943 ~ 2025 / In Loving Memory

Lander, WY-Roger Stanley Sherman Jensen, son of Alice Carmichael and adopted son of James Jensen, passed away early Saturday morning, June 7, 2025, in his home in Lander, Wyoming, at the age of 81. He passed away from complications of Parkinson's Disease. He was born December 20, 1943, in Shenandoah, Iowa, to Alice and Randolph Sherman. He grew up primarily in Iowa, Hastings, Nebraska, and Bountiful, Utah. Roger served a mission in Germany for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He attended Brigham Young University (BYU) and received a B.A. degree in International Relations. While at BYU, Roger met his wife, Dorothy Ann Olson. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple on January 25, 1968. Roger was an excellent salesman and worked for a number of different companies in California, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado. He also worked as a radio broadcaster, which took him into Public Affairs for the Utah National Guard. Later in his career, he worked full-time for the Utah National Guard in charge of all language testing in the state. Roger retired from military service as a Master Sergeant. Roger spent many of his later years in St. George, Utah, before finally settling in Lander, Wyoming. Roger served in a variety of Church positions, including High Councilman and Bishop, twice. After they retired, he and Dorothy served a mission in the Kenya, Nairobi Mission as the Directors of Public Affairs. He gave his life to service in the Church and was a disciple of Jesus Christ in the truest sense. He enjoyed basketball and golf, and loved BYU sports of all kinds. Of all of the things Roger did with his life, the things that meant the most to him were his family, his service in the Church, and his military service. He will be missed greatly by his many friends and family. Roger is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and sons, Robert, J.R., Scott, and Alexander, and his daughter, Amanda Ellett, as well as his adopted children Melanie and Curtis Hart. He has 28 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Christian. A memorial service will be held in Lander, WY, at 6:00 pm on Friday, July 25th, 2025 at the LDS chapel located at 653 Cascade St., Lander, WY 82520. A second memorial service will be held in Provo, UT at 3:00 pm on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025 at the LDS chapel located at 350 E 2950 N, Provo, UT 84604.

Dear Dorothy and Family,
I´m so sorry to hear of Roger´s passing. He was always kind, friendly and a man of integrity. What a blessing it is to understand the Plan of Salvation and know that you will be reunited as an eternal family.
I send much love and empathy.

I was Elder Roger Jensen´s first mission companion and trainer, though we didn´t use that term in those days. He didn´t need much training. My memories of him were all highly favorable. He was a pleasant, totally good-natured missionary, even when the gallon of home-made root beer we tried to concoct exploded all over the walls and carpet of our room as we were kneeling in prayer at day´s end. We hadn´t considered the yeast called for in the recipe would make it ferment and a violation of the Word of Wisdom anyway. Elder Jensen had an aura of spirituality that we could tell would lead to a calling to leadership. Bishop twice does not surprise me. Director of Church public affairs in Nairobi does not. Master Sargent does not. A career in the military does. He seemed entirely too congenial to be a soldier. I was pleased to see in his obituary a brief recounting of what obviously was a prosperous, well-lived life. I felt fortunate to be paired with him for 6 months. Jensen´s, you were, I´m sure, fortunate to be with him for decades. In this time of sadness I hope you can look happily on the blessing he was, is, and will continue to be in your family.
