Amy Van Meter Obituary

Amy Van Meter died on October 21, 2010 in Santa Barbara, California at the home she shared with her loving and devoted husband, Will McClintock. She was 43 years old.
She is survived by Will, her mother, Lea Halterman (Beryl) of Des Moines, her father, Michael Van Meter (Judy Hillman), of Saugatauk, MI, her brother Clarke Van Meter of Delhi, IA, her aunt, Sandra Jennings of Des Moines, Will's parents, Sally and James McClintock of East Lansing MI, her brother-in-law, Matthew and his wife, Greta McClintock of Santa Barbara and her nephews, Finn McClintock and Michael C. Van Meter.
These are not the only ones who are surviving Amy's death. Her extended family, friends from West High in Iowa City, from Earlham College where she graduated in Peace and Global Studies, 1989, friends at Notre Dame where she graduated in Peace Studies, 1993, friends and colleagues at the University of California, Santa Barbara where she was an administrator, friends from Trinity Episcopal church, and those from her many and varied interests and pursuits.
Amy was an engaging, funny, beautiful young woman who truly lived her life. She was passionate about access for persons with disabilities in Santa Barbara particularly those who have multiple sclerosis. She was a talented writer and worked hard to become a better one. But, most of all she was passionate about the many friends who, in the last few years have talked with her, read to her, prayed with and for her, lifted her body, and laughed and cried with her. Family and these friends kept vigil with Amy day and night when she knew the end of her life was near.
The city of Santa Barbara, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and her Congresswoman have formally honored Amy for her hard work and loving commitment on behalf of persons with disabilities. But perhaps her greatest legacy is left to the ones who knew her best. We have learned the meaning of fortitude in unrelenting pain, courage in uncommon trials, generosity of spirit, and faithfulness to a fully present life. Those who knew Amy and knew about her are now both grieving the loss and celebrating her life.
Contributions in Amy's memory may be made to the Southern California: National MS Society, Channel Islands Office 14 W. Valerio St., Santa Barbara, CA 93101.

Amy was a bright light at Trinity Church, where I had the pleasure of briefly knowing her. She touched my life in many ways.
RIP Amy, you will be missed, dear girl.

Hi.
I unfortunantely did not know Amy, she sounds like an amazing person. I did meet her Mom, Lea on the plane on her way to see Amy for the last time. I wanted to let her know that I shared the story with several people in regards to how desperate she was to see Amy and how US Airways really went above and beyond to get Lea to Sanata Barbara following our flight delays.
My condolances to the family, I am so sorry for your loss.
If Lea sees this and would like to ever talk, I would be happy to do so. I also lost a daughter and I know that deep grief from losing a child.
If you review this and want to just pass my information on to Lea instead of posting that is fine and taking my phone number off would be great either way.
Thank you and again, I am terribly sorry but so glad Lea made it to see Amy.
