Paul M. Pickering, 55 of Des Moines died peacefully on Saturday, September 17, 2016 following a long bout with heart disease with family and friends by his side.

Memorial services will be 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Hamilton's Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, in Altoona, Iowa. A visitation with family present will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.

Paul was born Story City, Iowa on February 24, 1961, the son of Myron and Alice (Henderson) Pickering. He grew up in Roland and Altoona where he graduated from Southeast Polk Schools in Runnells.

Paul worked in his career as a Stationary Engineer, building maintenance and carpentry as a union member before being disabled with heart disease.

Paul enjoyed his close friends Mike Price, Greg Godfroy, Ron Childs and Pat Schaffer, computers, live music, camping, fishing, baseball, football and swimming. He worked with his father, Myron in the construction of several homes in the Des Moines and Altoona area. Paul and his four closest friends terrorized Altoona during their childhood days, but had a great time.

Paul married his long-time companion Karen Logsdon on June 24, 2014

Survivors include his wife, Karen Pickering, his parents, Myron and Alice Pickering of Des Moines, his sisters Cindi Pickering of the Norwoodville area of Des Moines, Joy (Roger) Caudron of Sioux City, and Lori Evans also of the Norwoodville area of Des Moines, nieces Rhiannon (Dave) Killmer of Des Moines and Ashley Evans of Norwoodville, and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Peder and Lenora Henderson and Winford and Cecil Pickering and his nephew, Jamie Outland.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Taylor House Hospice or Altoona United Methodist Church.
