CARL CAMPBELL Obituary
82 formerly of Kokomo, Indiana and Rochester, MI, died at 8:50 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2004 at The Twin City Health Care in Gas City, IN. He was born March 19, 1921 in Kokomo, IN the son of Lewis Edward and Leona Pearl (Drake) Campbell. Mr. Campbell was raised in Kokomo, IN and was named to the Indiana All-State Basketball Team in both his junior and senior years at Kokomo High School. After graduating in 1941, he attended Indiana University on a basketball scholarship, and was coached by the late Branch McCracken. Mr. Campbell was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1966. As a result of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Mr. Campbell left Indiana University and joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific on an aircraft carrier from 1942 until 1946. Subsequent to his honorable discharge in 1946, he completed his college education and played basketball for Lawrence Tech in Detroit, MI. During this time Lawrence Tech was a nationally ranked basketball team. Mr. Campbell created a successful business career as founder and president of Phomat Corp. of Detroit, MI. He retired in 1981 and spent winters in FL. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed involvement in the athletic endeavors of his children for many years. He was often honored for his support of youth baseball programs. As a lifetime member of Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak, MI, he enjoyed golf for many years. A sudden stroke in 1990, from which he never fully recovered, curtailed an enjoyable life and his many activities. He married Virginia Erickson of Highland Park, MI. Mr. Campbell was the father of seven children one girl and six boys and all survive; Joan Swain of Marion, IN; Bruce Campbell of Bloomfield Hills, MI; Gary Campbell of Truckee, CA; Craig Campbell of Coral Springs, FL; Mark Campbell of Durham, N.C.; Steve Campbell of Rohnert Park, CA and Brian Campbell of Miami, FL. His family grew to include 20 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild who also survive him as well as a sister Dorothy Sporer, age 92 of Joliet, IL. He was preceded in death by two brothers Earl and Lewis Campbell and three sisters Hazel, Leona and Bertha. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at Fenn & Shirley Mortuary, Colonial Chapel, 1315 West Lincoln Road, Kokomo with Pastor Ron Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Posts 1152 and 8035. Friends may call at the mortuary from 4-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
