Arnold Mann Obituary

Arnold Sheldon "Shelly" Mann died peacefully Monday morning, Jan. 11, 2010, in his 71st year.
Service: 9:30 a.m. Friday with military honors in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to The Paulie Ayala Foundation, P.O. Box 16187, Fort Worth, Texas 76162, assisting amateur athletes with educational and scholarship opportunities; or Jewish Family Services, 4049 Kingsridge Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76109.
Shelly moved to Fort Worth from Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1965, where he soon after immersed himself in the local sports community. His involvement included hosting talk shows, play-by-play for the Fort Worth Red Wings, and PA announcer for TCU Horned Frogs football. Shelly's passions were Fort Worth's boxing community and local high school sports. He had been a fixture in the local boxing scene since the early 1980s. His involvement ranged from helping organize shows, ticket sales, and his true love, ring announcing. Shelly also presented play-by-play of local high school sports on the radio for the better part of 20 years. He followed local teams to regional and state tournaments as often as he could.
Nearest to his heart were his children and grandchildren. Shelly was an active participant in the lives of his grandchildren. He was a fixture at all of their activities, events and games. Shelly Mann had an enormous heart and never met a stranger. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Magid.
Survivors: In addition to his children, Howard Mann and his wife, Sherry, Heidi Mann Prellwitz and her husband, Marty, and Brandy Kaplan and her husband, Loren, Shelly is survived by his grandchildren, Michael and Grayson Mann, Gavin Prellwitz and Joseph and Jacob Kaplan; his mother, Mildred Butchen Magid; sister, Sheila Sirota and her husband, Ben; and a niece and her family.

The loss of Shelly Mann leaves a space not easily filled. Whenever I hear Simon & Garfunkel's "The Boxer", my mind always brings forward a view of Shelly, back in the '70s, standing next to his red Pontiac Grand Prix on a Saturday morning.

To Shelly's Family:
I knew Shelly as a kind and generous man who cared about other people. As a sports columnist, I had the opportunity to talk with Shelly on many occasions at various boxing events and even to write about him and his love for boxing. I was fortunate enough to see him briefly at the last Sundance Square "Fight Night," which I attended solely as a spectator with two of my grown sons. My heart goes out to all of you but Shelly had a wonderful life, doing what he loved to do.
Respectfully,
Jim Reeves
